So i can choose between this. My dad has two monitors, they would last me a little while until i got a new one or i could get one that is 144hz so i wouldnt have to deal with v-sync. My main question here is if i use v-sync on my 60hz monitor, will that hurt the performance alot? my cpu and gpu will be the the i5-4690k and the gtx 970 strix. Those two are very very powerful and i probably shouldn't worry too much about v-sync hurting the performance because i ASSUME ill still get playable frame rates. ill be playing games like cs:go, robocraft, bf4, just really any game that is similar to those. Some will be demanding, others, not so much. Anyways, Can somebody tell me if v-sync will hurt performance so much to the point where things won't be playable?
Also, how much input lag would it cause? I really dont mind if its like 20ms cuz thats just unnoticeable. maybe in fps games it will be but not for the games ill be playing (most of the time).

Solution
Uhmm...

V-sync is is used to synchronize the ouput with the monitor refresh rate..

Most cases of v-sync use is when experiencing sreen tearing

Also, "very very powerful"
You sir, made me smile today.

Hahaha well they are very powerful components but if i were to use a 60hz monitor on a game like cs:go or something of that sort, and i got like 200ish fps, would i get screen tearing? isn't screen tearing when your computer pushing more fps than your monitor can handle?

No, dont bring that into this thread... The human eye, if trained, can see any amount of fps/hz... for proof, go look at linus from linustechtips/ncixt get all the answers correct to deciding which monitor is 60hz or 120hz... There is absolutely a difference. 60hz may be enough for SOME people but i dont kow about me because im just now getting into pc gaming.

Thank you for nipping that in the bud.

Its ok.
Its your preference.

I actually watched the video of linus on techquickie after your reply...

Hmmm, never knew my physics professor was so wrong about light particles and how the brain takes a fraction of a second to process the photons received by the eyes..

if youre running a 60htz screen with a gtx 970 turn vsync on - itll run any game at a solid 60fps,running any more fps than 60 on a 60htz screen is a waste of resources, will make your system run hotter (especially the gpu) for no reason whatsoever & is absolutely pointless.

What? how could it make my system run hotter??? I've never heard of that before

Yeah... Some people get things wrong sometimes... EVEN if they're a physics professor... he probably wasn't wrong about it but like i said, if you TRAIN your eyes to pay attention to certain small details, then well, you'll be able to see such small details without really trying. Which is probably what linus did

He is saying that if you are producing more frames per second than your monitor can handle then those extra frames are wasted. Your graphics card is working full speed to generate frames that will not be utilized hense the power consumption and heat will be higher than if the card only worked hard enough to generate 60 fps.

This pretty much exactly - could not have worded it better myself.
Just for an example, the 970 is eminently capable of maxing dragon age inquisition out locked to 60fps at around 70% usage. With vysnc enabled at 60fps my card never gets above 60c over the course of 2 hours,my case temps are cooler, the cpu cooler & case fans dont have to work as hard, the whole system is cooler & quieter.
If I drop vsync off I can pull 100-120fps which is nice for bragging rights but on my 60htz screen it quite literally looks no different (its actually worse due to screen tearing),the 970 sits at 97-99% usage constantly, within 10 minutes its hit temps of around 78c,within another 20 minutes my cpu temp has increased by another 5c,the fans are audibly running faster to cope & the whole system has heated up around 15c or so.

Ahh okay i see. thank you
