Hello,

I am looking to buy an extremely inexpensive used monitor on a similar website to craigslist and I've seen something nice for 40$ CAD. The only issue I have is that on my desk there's not enough space to have another screen placed horizontally. I've previously owned one which I placed vertically which did the job for me but I foolishly discarded it. I know from experience that having a TN panel placed vertically is terrible because the viewing angles are horrendous and the image just appears to be almost all blacked out. I tried it with an IPS panel and it works perfectly, or I didn't notice anything and now I'm wondering what would happen if I put a VA display vertically since I found being sold for 40$ which is the BenQ GW2255 21.5".

VA will be somewhat between your TN and IPS experiences. (I have all 3 types in my possession). That said, 40$ is pretty dang cheap. Unless you can find an IPS for the same price, it seems like a foregone conclusion.
