Various questions on "unlocking" the Barton 3000+

Ok, Ive been a happy user of my Barton 3000+ (the one with the 166mHz FSB) for awhile, and seeing its age is showing FAST, Im deeply considering overclocking. Although I have done minor overclocks on various systems before, but I have never done something like unlock a multiplier. Although I have many questions, ill try to keep it short and simple: first, how exactly do you do this? (links would be nice as well ) second, is it possible to do this via software? Third, what is a potentail/decent overclock that my CPU could obtain from its current 2.166 defalut clock speed? any feedback would be execelent, and thank you

I have the same processor and am in basically the same boat as megajynx.. No money to upgrade but I want to squeeze a little more life out of this proc.

I have the same processor on DFI Lanparty KT400A motherboard running at 2.403Ghz, rock stable. It will do 2.45 or so but some of my games get errors and crash out to the desktop. 2.5 or so and it won't boot all the way into windows without restarting.

I have two stage water/peltier cooling system, run CPUidle extreme and MBM (motherboard monitor).

I have the CPU multiplier @13.5 and the FSB @178. This is the most stable. Memory is on fast timings but I had to bump up the voltage to max but it works pretty good.

It is not as fast as the newest models but not to shabby and easily gets the job done no problem.

The 3000 runs at stock of 2.13 right?

Mine is 2.105 and i believe its at stock settings.. Also Cpuz says its at 10.5x and I cant adjust my multiplier so im assuming thats stock, but I thought stock was higher?

Also Thisforum, how did you unlock your multiplier? And did you get any decent OC's without the fancy cooling or did you have that when you got the proc?

ther are two kinds of AXP 3000+ Barton, one has 400Mhz(DDR)fsb which has 10.5x multiplier and the other has 333Mhz(DDR)fsb w/ 13x multiplier.

Actually there's a third. There's a Barton 3000+ Mobile (part #AXMA3000FKT4C) which to my knowledge is the only one you can overclock via the multipliers because it comes unlocked from AMD. It runs stock at 133 MHZ (266 DDR).

I believe the Mobile versions of Athlon XPs are the only ones you can overclock via the multiplier. The rest are locked and cannot be unlocked. Do not try the pencil trick or you will have a nice paperweight on your hands.

megajynx, if your's runs at 166 MHZ (333 DDR), then you have one that cannot be unlocked. You have to OC it through the bus.

I didn't do anything to the CPU, it was stock @13 multiplier, 13x166(333DDR) =2158, It would easily go to 13.5 multiplier without any changes and would also go to 12Multiplier w/FSB of 183 pretty easily so I had a fairly good working range with a highly variable FSB as long as all my other devices held up.

It will do 169FSB without fancy cooling or 13.5x169=2281, close to 2.3Ghz and gets squirrely but still functional at 13.5x171=2308, 170FSB is managable with very good air cooling and circulation. Water cooling was necessary for anthing higher and I only use my custom made second stage peltier cooling when doing heavy, heavy nonstop gaming for ultimate stability, otherwise regular water cooling is fine.

The Barton XP is highly underrated and if they had bumped it up to 2.6 with 1MB of cache it would of wiped the floor with all the Athlon64's except maybe the highest end models.
