Hi,

I am looking for a wireless router that is compatible with Vodafone Spain VDSL service and also supports a VPN server within the router. Those are the only features I need, I don’t need 3G or 4G or anything like that.
Any recommendations?

Thanks

You have to know the Router2' WAN IP address, and on that router port-forward toward PC2 local (LAN) IP address, and that database' port number. You can get port numbers from working installation of that till software.
Do modems on their own exist any more?
I've not seen just an ADSL modem for a long time, everything has been a modem/router combined for years and I've only ever seen VDSL modem/routers combined.
I live in Europe if that makes any difference

I am not 100% sure but asus routers tend to have vpn even in their dsl models. I would see if the DSL-ac68u will work it says it have both client and server vpn. The part that is a question would be if it will work with work with vodafone. VDSL is not always 100% standard. I would see if the router is on the ISP approved list or call and ask them if it will work.

You would then look at the online manuals and see if it has the vpn features you need.

I read about setting up a VPN server on Asus routers last night so I will definitely look into that, thanks.

I think I have got myself confused a bit now, but this little diagram is what I am trying to achieve - http://i.imgur.com/wAb3cHs.jpg

All I need is PC1 to be able to read the database on PC2 over the internet
I was under the impression, maybe from some bad advice, that I could create a VPN server and setup DDNS in router 2 and then just create a VPN within Windows on PC1 that would allow it to then connect to PC2 via the VPN server, is this so?

I have read about site to site VPN and IPSec tunnels, but I'm not sure that is what I need

Thanks

You can do it with a client based vpn on one or both ends or you can use router based vpn on both ends. Best to get routers on both ends that can act as client and servers then you have the option to use the routers. If you have issues getting it setup you can then try other combinations of client/router based vpn. You technically can place a vpn server on your database server and a vpn client on your pc. It is not necessarily simpler either way. VPN has so many options it becomes confusing so you just keep trying until you get it to work

You likely will have to use ddns as you suspect if your IP changes.

You overall concept though is correct it is just messy to configure, although there are standards for vpn every software package is configured just a little different so there is always confusion.

PC1 is windows 8
PC2 is windows v1703
I tried setting up a VPN server on PC2 but it failed, it seems to be a "feature" of v1703 that VPN server no longer works. Also the current router I have is a vodafone one and I think it was blocking the incoming VPN
That is when someone suggested getting a router with VPN server built in.

The database is in some till software, it's not so well written software as well, it does some random things but my boss has been using it for years and won't/can't change.
All the software hasfor the database config is a hostname/ IP address and port number
If I port forward in router 2, how would I specify on PC1 the hostname/ IP address?
