Vecram and USB Adaptor

I have been using Vecram for quite some time now with great success.
Unfortunately my old PC finally died and my new one does not have a serial
port!
I purchased a USB to serial adaptor which shows up as Com4 but whenever I
start up Vecram all I get is "Runtime error 8002; Invalid port number".
I am running Windows XP SP2.
Any suggestions?

I re-loaded my driver and assigned my usb to serial adapter to com1, 38400,
1 stop, no parity, no flow control.
The Vecram software now wakes up and when i turn on the vec it says
"connected".
Now when I try to dowload a .bin file it will either display 'downloading'
with nothing on the progress bar or it will say 'download error'.
Will Vecram simply not work with an adapter?

It should work OK with the USB adaptor like the VecFlash does.

I have an adaptor, so I will investigate further.

Richard,

Thanks for your reply.
I tried using realterm to help figure out what is going on.
When I connect to the Vec and I send an ASCII "c" the Vec starts up with
Minestorm.
I have noticed that the echoed characters returned from the Vecram are often
corrupted.
For instance, instead of sending an "r" when I turn on the Vec I get
greatewr-than-or-equal-to symbol.
When I send ASCII "0" through "9" it echoes back correctly but when "A"
through "F" will most often be corrupted.
Could it be that my USB adapter (SimpleTech off of EBAY) does use the
correct RS-232 voltages or cannot drive enough current to avoid corruption
of the data?

Dan, try my new driver - www.vectrex.biz/VecRam_new.zip

I just tested it with my USB adaptor and it works fine.

Richard,

Just tried the new software and it works great!
Thank you 🙂
It's a little slower than it used to be but it works all the same.
Now if only I can get Hyperterminal to work with my KIM-1.
By the way, I opened up the D9 connector to check if perhaps a wire did not
pop off one of the pins.
I noticed that you placed a couple of resisters on the TX/RX pins. Are those
just for current limting?
