Vega 64 or GTX 1080 when I have a FreeSync monitor

This question has been asked a few times but please humour me.

I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card. I currently have a R9 380X with a 1440p Freesync monitor with 144 frame rate.

I'm mostly interested in the upgrade to power my Vive though. Namely Fallout 4 VR at the moment.

Before the new year I was set on a Vega 64, however they now seem ridiculously difficult to get your hands on at the moment, and also the prices seemed to have spiked accordingly.

So with the existing FreeSync monitor in mind, is it worth considering the GTX 1080? Seems to me there is an approx £200 difference in price and they're available.

Or (as I get more confused reading other posts) is the 1080 actually comparable to the Vega 56. As the Vega 64 seems to be in 1080ti price ranges?

My choice seems to be wait and get a Vega that goes with the monitor, or lose FreeSync and get the 1080 now. Tbf, I'd expect the monitor to out last the card, so may not be the last time FreeSync will be used on it, but seems a shame when I only bought in Spring 2017.

Solution
I will get 1080 ti or this combo if you want to buy today instead of waiting for Vega 64 to come back into stock:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Video Card: MSI - GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 8GB ARMOR Video Card (£420.00 @ Amazon UK)
Monitor: Acer - Predator XB271HUA 27.0" 2560x1440 165Hz Monitor (£499.99 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £919.99

1070 ti can OC to 1080 stock level.
what refresh rate is your monitor?
Freesync only works with AMD, but vega [strike]is way worse than [/strike] is on par with 1080,
you can turn off freesync and the monitor is a regular monitor for Geforce, you can then turn on vsync if you see stuttering.
Ideally, a Gsync monitor is better.

144Hz, updated in post.

Yeah, I know FreeSync is AMD only (that's a rant for another day 😉)

I am leaning towards 1080 right now, if anything for the price.
