Recently built a system for the first time.

Specs:
Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-MA790FX-UD5P
CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz
GPU - SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870 1GB
RAM - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
HDD - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB
DVD - LITE-ON Black 24X DVD+R
PSU - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W

My problem is that whenever I boot up (this is with no OS installed) it hangs at verifying DMI pool data.

I've tried several fixes including trying to boot with the bare minimum (No DVD drive 1 stick of ram etc) just hangs. I've tried changing the SATA slot and the connectors but with no luck. I tried clearing the BIOS, using the fail-safe bios settings, slowing the RAM speed down, changing the BIOS from native IDE to Native RAID but none of these worked.

If I boot from an installation CD-ROM it will get past the verification. It is extremely slow during the installation. I get to the part of the install where it has you choose the HDD but it does not detect a HDD. So I reset and looked in the BIOS. The BIOS detects the drive just fine. I thought maybe it just needed the drivers so I went back in the installation and when it asked for drivers I put the CD that came with the MOBO in and found the driver folders for SATA but the install said no drivers were found that were compatible with the hardware. I tried downloading the drivers from gigabyte but those also didn't work.

I tried booting with a HDD that has an xp installation already on it from a different comp but it had the same problem.

As a last ditch effort I borrowed a floppy disk drive to see if I could flash the bios or boot to DOS but this also hung at the verifying part. Tried flashing the bios from inside the bios using q-flash but I got a disk access error.

Is there something wrong with the MOBO? or could it possibly be my HDD?

A hang at the DMI verification is generally caused by the SMBIOS trying to figure out a user supplied configuration that's either impossible or deeply illogical. For the UD5P and, to a lesser extent the UD3P, this is often a boot list error. There's about a 90% chance that if you remove everything in your start up sequence but the HDD (first) and the CD-ROM (second) it'll stop hanging. Then as soon you get to the part in the XP installation when it says "inspecting hardware" immediately press F6 and load your drivers.

If that doesn't work try using a grub disk to force a windows boot sector onto you hard drive
you can grab one at www.supergrubdisk.org

If THAT doesn't work you may have to RMA your caviar.
