Question Verizon Fios Router

Are you going to have any service except internet from FIOS? If so then you are stuck using their router. You don't have to use the WIFI but you have to use the router. I would recommend getting WIFI access point(s) connected via wired ethernet to the FIOS router. That is what I used when I had FIOS.

It is not really a direct replacement. The verizon box uses coax to connect to the ONT and there is no third party router that you can replace it with since they are using something kinda proprietary.

Now you can ask verizon to use the ethernet port on the ONT and then you can use your own router. That does not always mean you can get rid of their router. If you have tv service from them you must keep their router for the online guide if I remember correctly.

You have to make sure when you buy routers you actually know what you are buying and not get mislead by marketing. 802.11ax is not going to start to certify equipment until later this year...at least that is what I read a couple months ago. Any equipment you buy now is not officially certified. It may or may not work well. The 802.11n draft garbage ended up with lots of incompatible devices. There is only 1 phone I think that even supports 802.11ax.

You are best off waiting until next year to chase 802.11ax stuff. By then we should also know if there is any benefit to spending the huge amounts they want for this equipment. I don't think there is any solution to the major problem with wifi and that is all your neighbors also trying to use wifi bandwidth.

The latest verizon router has pretty good reviews. There is not a significant difference in the wifi coverage. Mostly it would be if you need some software feature the verizon box does not have. The really nice feature the verizon device does have is it has a built in moca adapter. This means you can extend the network using coax tv cables and only have to buy a moca adapter on the remote end.

Verizon provides https://www.verizon.com/home/accessories/fios-quantum-gateway/ for $12 a month.

I am moving into a 3000 sq foot home on an acre and was considering getting my own router instead.

I believe this one below is compatible, but looking for opinions and suggestions:

I have that same router from Verizon.
Smaller house, but it is actually very nice.

And don't rent it from them at $12/month...buy it outright. They'll even split the full cost over your next couple of monthly payments, then you're done.

For a house that large, placement is the key concern. Do NOT have your router (whichever one) in the mancave in the basement. Somewhere close to the center of the house.
