Verizon router can it be changed

Hey all, my father has fois from verizon and when they came to install it, they supplied us with a router that has verizon name on it, now im just wondering bec me and my bro both have adapters that can get up to 300 mbps, but we only get 54 mbps, so i was wondering can i buy a diff router, maybe an better one and it will give us more mbps faster internet. So the question when verizon gave us the router can the internet only work with the router they supplied and whatever they gave us thats what we have, or can i get a diff router and maybe even have faster internet?
(sorry if im unclear)

Also if i can get an diff router which 1 would the experts say 2 get, best bang for buck😀 price range 50- 80$ could go more but rather not...

Verizon can control the speed from there end. What speed package did you pay for?

from web site: 802.11b or 802.11g wireless adapter for wireless connections <<<<<--- old tech.

Do you have the admin login for it? if you do, get yourself an N access point an then turn off the WiFi in the Verizon rig
