Version mismatch irritant

Am I the only one who gets irritated when some 40k file knocks me off a
server after downloading 50 meg of map files because of a version mismatch?

You have to exit UT, delete the offending file and start over...not a
very efficient way to handle this (game/map coders listen-up).

Why not have game code to ask for an overwrite (Y/N) rather than knock
you off a server when downloading?

Why don't writers of said files give them different names rather than
same-naming when they KNOW everyone will have to go thru at least one,
version mismatch episode, and probably more if they play many servers?

A friend of mine says that is what Clans do to keep noobs out of their
game. If you have the "Common" version of a map, you'll get the
version mismatch and go to another server. Not sure how true this is,
but I can see people doing it.

You should start drinking prune juice and KY jelly cocktails right now,
that will make things a lot smoother.

I rarely see this with maps, but primarily with the small .u files used
for "security" checking in games. I think map makers may know a little
bit about "version" sufixes..if for no other reason than monitoring
their feedback on a map's evolution! Thus my extreme irritation of
downloading dozens of megs total for a map only to get sniped by a
stupid couple-dozen-k .u file. I suppose gaming noobs may not know how
to fix a version mismatch, but why make everyone suffer just to scare
off a few noobs? Besides, the "gaming noob" may be a "PC guru" that
knows exactly what to do, so whats the gain or point?
Oh well...back to fraggin' :)
