Vertical purple line on display - GPU problem?

Hi all,

Built my first PC a few months ago and have been loving it. This morning, though, almost had a heart attack when I booted up and saw a vibrant purple vertical line running up and down the left side of the display.

OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Monitor: Dell U2713HM

GPU: MSI N680 Power Edition

The monitor is connected to the GPU with a DisplayPort cable. Temperature inside my case is pretty steady at 28 while just browsing the net, never goes higher than 30 unless I'm playing a game.

My first thought was that the display was conking out on me. While browsing around Dell's website to get the warranty support phone number, I noticed that the line was fading in intensity but was still visible. Once on the phone with Dell, the lady suggested I hook the display up to a different computer. "Sure, I'll humor her," I thought, but was surprised to find that the line was gone after hooking the monitor up to an old laptop via the blue old-school connector that came with the monitor. When I reconnected the monitor to my rig via DisplayPort, the line was gone. I felt very stupid and apologized to the Dell lady for wasting her time.

A few minutes ago, the line returned with a vengeance. Bright as hell. I tried unplugging the DP cable and reconnecting it; still there. While frantically navigating to Tom's Hardware to search their forums, the line vanished abruptly. The display looks completely fine as I type this.

What the heck is going on? If I had a faulty monitor, I'm assuming the line would be a permanent fixture and would not be coming and going. That leaves either the GPU or the DisplayPort cable as the likely culprit. Any ideas? This purple line is going to haunt my dreams until I get this sorted out.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer!

Its either the display or the cable. A GPU does not do that. EVER...

Most likely its the display, its VERY common on laptops especially. And I have repaired many of those. 9 out of 10 is the panel itself.

Thanks. Guess I should just leave the monitor hooked up to my laptop and wait for the line to reappear so as to confirm that the display is faulty.

:/ This sucks. I don't imagine Dell would reimburse me for the return shipping cost of this monster either.

They probably would not, no. Sorry...

I've had problems with a bad port/cable that made my whole screen flash purple and green. Sadly I don't know whether it was the cable or the port since I bought a new cable and switched ports.
