I have a Thinkpad T510 (4313-CTO) with Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. Until recently, I had 3 GBs of RAM which had been installed when I customized (2GB upper/1GB lower). I began having serious slowdowns a few months ago and upgraded my RAM, installing 8GB (2x4GB). Nothing changed. I then learned that a 32-bit system can't use 8GBs anyway, only a max of 4GB. So I removed the lower stick and started other troubleshooting.
I disabled all but four programs from startup and now have only Glary Utilities, CCleaner, Evernote and Dropbox. There are lots of services running but they do not seem to be using a lot of memory, unless I am misreading the reports.
From the Performance Monitor and other diagnostics, I have seen that a lot of memory was being consumed by Thunderbird and Chrome, so I disabled most extensions in Chrome and deleted and archived a lot of my email. The system improved but only a bit. I still have very high memory usage with both those Google apps and with some others. And it seems that quitting the programs doesn't result in any change for at least a couple of minutes; the memory usage continues to show in the Processes tab of Windows Task Manager.
I also just ran a performance report and got this:
Warning
Symptom: The system is experiencing excessive paging
Cause: Available memory on the system is low.
Details: The total physical memory on the system is not capable of handling the load.
Resolution: Upgrade the physical memory or reduce system load
Performance
Resource Overview
Component Status Utilization Details
CPU Idle 7 % Low CPU load.
Network Idle 0 % Busiest network adapter is less than 15%.
Disk Idle 34 /sec Disk I/O is less than 100 (read/write) per second on disk 0. Reads 21.6/sec + Writes 11.9/sec
Memory Busy 97 % 89 MB Available.
No viruses or malware after running run anti-virus and anti-malmare programs. I also played with the page file size a bit, after reading about it in the forums, but again there seems to be very little difference. Currently, I am letting Windows manage the page file size.
I consider myself slightly above-average in my understanding of computers but I am baffled by what the problem is here. This is interfering with my ability to get work done, aside from driving me nuts. I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks for any help you can give.
