[SOLVED] Very huge latency while using bandwidth on wifi

Hello,

I bought a TP-Link Archer C80 few weeks ago to use it as an access point for my Freebox Revolution (ISP Router) because of its bad wifi. It doesn't disconnect, the network is better but i noticed a new problem: whenever bandwidth is used, the latency goes nuts exemple:

On Wifi N 2.4ghz, my maximum speed is around 7mb/s while on my Freebox Revolution 5mb/s. Trying either a direct download or torrent, limiting to 2mb/s with no other device plugged it. I get around 500-2000ms the time while downloading, while on my Freebox wifi i only get 50-100ms (keep in mind that base ms of either of the router is 5-10ms). Its not only my computer, the whole wifi network get the same latency making it borderline unusable despite having like 5 mb/s of bandwith free to use

I don't know how to fix this, beside a possible system update. If i need a new router as ap, what would be a good choice for maximum 70-90$? Thanks
 
Why are you only using the 2.4g radio. Both the nic card you have and the tplink router support 5g. Not sure it will fix the latency spikes but it should be faster

It is not unusual to see much increased latency when other machine are using bandwidth. It is strange though that first you get such poor transfer speeds and that even at those slow speeds it affects other machines. It likely is interference that is causing both issue but there is not really a way to fix it. You can try changing radio channels but it is highly like all are being used by multiple other neighbors. Does not hurt to try though. On 2.4 you want to use 1,6 or 11 with 1 and 11 being preferred. Set the channel width to 20mhz. Almost everyone is overlapping channel 6 that is using 40mhz setting so it tends to have more interference even if you set you r router to 20mhz and use channel 6

I disabled because i believed it could cause some interfence, especially since the only devices that detect them from a 100cm distance+ are smartphones. Oh and btw i meant MIBs my bad so the download speed are pretty standard and not low

I'm using 2.4 canal1 or 11, with 20mhz

Retested again. With Freebox/TP Link and 2ghz/5ghz/ethernet latency while downloading. Using this website as test: https://speed.hetzner.de/ (tested toO some torrent with open ports but not at the same time). cm is the distance between the router and the laptop. 100cm = same room, 850cm = my room. No other device on the network or any activity :

Wifi TP Link : 3-4 MIB max 850cm : 100-900ms
Wifi TP Link : 1.5 MIB limited 850cm : 10-40ms
Wifi TP Link : 13 MIB 100cm : 100-200ms
Wifi Freebox : 1.5 MIB (limited max 5) 850cm : 40-100ms

Wifi TP Link 5GHZ close 100cm : 25 MIB : 5-20ms
Wifi Freebox 5GHZ close 100cm : 16 MIB : 50-100ms

Ethernet TP Link : 35 MIBS (max 100 but the server is prob limited) : 4 ms
Ethernet Freebox : 35 MIBS (max 100) : 4 ms

We can see that while wired, both of the routers gives the same result, with no latency at all while pinging despite using the maximum bandwidth (or close to, because the server is limited)

TP Link 5Ghz is also pretty good, but only up to 100cm.

TP Link 2.4Ghz is also way faster closer than at my room (13 MIB vs 6-7 MIB)


I really want to understand if its a router or a wifi problem. I installed wireshark to check the activity on the wifi but nothing suspicious, its just that sometime while in use, the latency goes through the roof especially if you "use the bandwidth" (watching even a 480p video)





Freebox Revolution is kind of bad: lower download/upload speed on both 2Ghz and 5Ghz, unstable wifi (it stops once a day or twice) but the latency is more "stable"

TP-Link has the opposite

There's not much you can do, 7MB/s = 56mbps. Since wifi is half-duplex, the actual connection speed is likely around 112mbps. That sounds about right for 2.4ghz @ 20mhz channel width. I don't think you'll get a better connection that that, you're fully saturating your wifi so lag is expected as some packets will have to wait. Newer wifi standards like wifi 6 have OFDMA which will help, but even then you'll still get some latency as packets wait in qeue.

You need more bandwidth, I'd consider MOCA or powerline if you can't run ethernet.

Little update:

I have bought a new router: asus-rtx55

Much to my surprise, it runs way better than any of my other router. No bandwidth latency through wifi unless 100% of the bandwidth is used, no wifi that crash/bug, no real ping spike (went from 2500 to 150-200 occasional) and biggest difference: the 5ghz/ac range went from a mere 1 meter to 10-12 meter

Its probably because since AC/N aren't the standard anymore, the "cheap" router they actually release even for 50$ seems to be way worse than older ones from the 2010s for the same price. Seems like if you want a similar experience, you must get a 80-100$ AX router
