Hi,
After having tried to fix a stability issue by doing changes in the bios my computer crashed. After some hours I finally maaged to start windows but the startup has become much slower. Before the changes it took the system about 1 minute to start now it´s rather 5 minutes. Also many programs run very slowly now and scans that would normally take half an hour now take 3-4 hours. The sound doesn´t work properly either and the CPU value is much higher than usual. I´ve done some quick scans for possible viruses but nothing was detected. Maybe I need to run a full scan but that would take a lot of time. I ran some fast scans with Iobit Malware Fighter and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I´m not totally sure what caused these problems if it now was a change to default in the bios settings or anything else.

Yes, same if you format a partition. Your operating system is on the partition that has C: designated drive letter. If you delete or format that partition you lose your OS and all data. Thus no restore points would be an option.

Not sure if you have two physical hard drives or one hard drive with two partitions.

If it's one hard drive split in two, when you install windows fresh, just delete the C: partition and create a new partition to install windows on. This way your data on D: partition will be safe.

That's why I always split my hard drive into 2 partitions. One for windows and one for storage.

If you have two physical hard drives, then make sure to put your important stuff on the storage drive and delete all partitions on the physical windows drive and create new during setup.

Hi,
I´ve now been able to restore the sound function on my computer and to watch videos. The quality seems not to be fully restored to the original quality which was flawless but at least I´m able to watch videos with sound now. The only flaw as it seems to be is that there´s a little bit of a random noise in the background. It´s not very serious when watching youtube videos but I´d like to have it gone.
What I did to fix video and sound was change IDE back to AHCI and even to RAID in BIOS settings. But besides being able to watch videos now and sound being enbaled it still doesn´t feel like that very much of an improvement. The startup is still pretty slow and takes at least five times longer than before which is pretty much between 5 to 10 minutes.

Best

Thank you for your reply!
From what I can see I have two different hard drives a c drive and a d drive. I have copied a lot of my files form the c drive which is my main drive to the d drive. But I still do not know if the files on d drive work properly. I haven´t been able to boot into d drive only into c drive. Do you think that the problem of slow programs and a slow startup on c drive could be caused by troubles on d drive? Is it necessary for c drive to work properly that d drive is at least in an okay state?
By the way I changed SATA mode from IDE to AHCI and after it to RAID in BIOS settings. This change made it possible for me to watch videos and to have the audio back. At least the audio is back when I watch videos on youtube or elsewhere but there´s no audio when I start windows which seems to be strange since there was usually always some sound when I booted into desktop. Besides nothing has really changed, the startup is still pretty slow between 5- 10 minutes. Do I also have to change the other BIOS functions from IDE to AHCI or RAID for an improved performance to take place or would that not change anything? I have both Intel Raid SATA and Marvell 91 SATA. Marvell 91 SATA needs to be updated since some long time back but I have not been able to do so. Neither by using windows nor by trying to manually install updates for sata by downloading an installing updates from the internet has this been possible. Already before this error which I have now occured Marvell SATA seemed to have caused some instability although this was limited to only one crash a week while the system ran flawlessly for the rest of the time.

Any ideas what the problem may be and how to fix it?

Regards

Finn

Hope this is of any avail.

Also what I´v realized now is that there is some slight delay when I watch a video or a play one of my games like Rome 2 Total War.

Hi again,
I´ve now watched the same video on youtube but in different quality.
The first one that I watched in ordinary quality ran flawlessly without any hesitations, random sound or any other errors.
But the other one that I watched in hd quality had a lot of hesitations and thus also some random sound this is the same that goes for my games such as Rome 2 Total War or Warhammer 40.000 2.
Any idea what might cause this difference and how to fix it?

Regards

Finn

Changing the drive from IDE to RAID isn't going to help unless you have a RAID array, which it doesn't sound like you do. If you're having audio issues, that is being affected by something else. We will want to troubleshoot your audio device/driver.

You never answered about the modem that your router is connected to. What is the model? Unless you have stone age hardware, you should be getting 1Gbps speeds on a wired connection. Since you're on a 10/100 connection, that would definitely cause the lag you're seeing.

Thanks for your reply aford10!
As far as I can see my modem should be the following: TeliaGateway00 - 1F- 9F- F8- E4 - 78
This is a Swedish modem so I don´t know if the information is of any avail.
Well, to be honest the modme and router are not really new, I think they are seven or eight years old. I do also live on the countryside but besides that I had not actually experienced all the errors I´m experiencing now. The speed of my computer used to be pretty good just until about a week ago.
Could it be possible that it´s neither the internet nor my HDD that´s causing the lag but rather my graphics or something else? Do you want me to post you the specs of my HDD and graphics?

Yes, I have two drives a c drive and a d drive. I´ve run some tests on them now including the tests you recommended me but no errors were detected.
Any more ideas than what could cause the slow startup, programs and what could possibly cause an average cpu rate of 60%?

Thanks

Hi again!

I tried to update drivers through the device manager but wasn´t able to do so. A few devices are outdated and I did also try to download them on the manufacturer´s website but after downloading I wasn´t able to install them. Also for some devices I couldn´t find any updates online. The outdated devices are the following:
Etron USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller
Marvell 91xx SATA 6G Controller

Also a new category has been added which didn´t exist before the error. This new category is named "other devices" and when I click on it for more information I don´t get more information. These "other devices" are "unknown devices" according to the information. I tried to look for updates for them but it failed.

Any ideas what the problem might be and how to solve it?

Also I stopped some processes and my CPU usage seems to me less now. I´ve stopped many programs that are of no use to me but I´m not really sure if all programs that are of any avail are enabled. Could having some useful programs disabled also cause a slow startup?

There are a few different stages when a computer starts up. There is the first stage where the computer goes thru it's POST sequence. Then the computer will initiate the operating system boot process. There are several factors that can slow down the boot process.

I´ve now tested my pc performance using userbenchmark.
It detected that my boot drive is really bad and that my graphics and processor are too great either.
Here are the results:

Boot drive: The boot partition is located on a mechanical or hybrid drive. Moving the system to an SSD will yield far faster boot times, better system responsiveness and faster application load times.

Well, it seems so given that I couldn´t discover any SSD drive. But SSD really required for a quick boot? Before this pc issue I´m having now it only took the system about 1 minute to boot and if we assume that I don´t have a SSD then it must be something else.
