Very slow startup time

I recently build a new PC,
Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE
MOBO: ASUS M5A88-M
RAM: 1X4GB ADATA DDR3 1333MHz
HDD: WD cavier 80 GB IDE (using with IDE to SATA converter) {6-7 years old}
PSU: Corsair CX430V2
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Startup time is too much, it takes about 7 minutes to becomes usable. What should I do? Is it because of my old HDD?

I also have a laptop, Its a Compaq CQ45, with Athlon 64 X2@1.9GHz, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Despite of a less capable hardware, its speed is very good as compared to my above new PC.

Do a clean windows re-install. I would also remove the converter and use a SATA HD. 7 minutes is way too long.

yes, your old hard drive is slow. try defragging it and run check disk and check for errors. additionally you might have some mal-ware on it. you could also try a fresh OS install.

with the prices of HDD's through the roof, I would just buy a good SSD. these are all solid buys for the money.

change what programs run at start up.

click start in the run box type
msconfig
click on the startup tab
uncheck any programs you dont need at start up
dont worry when you click on the icon for them the will run, only now the will not auto run delaying the startup process

I am getting a used SATA HDD (WD 160GB SATA 8mb cache) for $27, this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075

I want to use SATA HDD with my new system and use my current IDE HDD in my old celeron PC

the SATA drive above has 8mb cache whereas my current IDE HDD has only 2MB. Will this increase any performance?. I read on wikipedia that
"Disk buffer sizes over 8MiB do not produce any performance gains. Where a buffer is large and the throughput of the disk is slow, the data becomes cached for too long, resulting in degraded performance over equivalent disks with smaller buffers. This degradation occurs because of longer latencies when flush commands are sent to a disk with a full buffer."
So now I dont want to invest on earlier mentioned 1TB seagate HDD with 64mb cache.

I am a bit short on money right now but need a drive to run my older computer which is HDD deficient. I will buy a good SSD later this year. So for the time I need to do this.
I dont need much storage as I have a 500GB ext HDD.

So the question is will this used SATA HDD improve boot/startup times over my current IDE HDD.

don't believe everything written on wiki. the cache does help, especially in writing. there are many variables that affect mechanical HDD. the older smaller drives are going to be slower than the newer larger drives.

Although this topic is old, but I have things to tell.

I also have Asus
M5A88-V EVO
and
F1A75-V EVO
latest bios (as of nov 2012).

They both have SATA III 6Gbps extremly slow.

No matter I try
-replace SSD with HDD other brand
-replace sata cable
-disconnect all other drive
-supply full power 750W
-downgrade bios version
-do clean windows install

The mainboards detect SSD / HDD
but Windows starts slowly
( 3 ~ 30 minutes although SSD spec 510MB/s write
and my SSD works fine on other machine )

I tried connect SSD with sata6g_2,
it becomes fast as normal
( 10 ~ 20 seconds to run XP fast as
when I newly purchased them )
And then next few days slow again.

After that, I connected with sata6g_3,
it fast then slow again.

I should not tolerate _4,_5,_6 any more.

Note1 : Bluray wrote BD-DL fail.
( may due to unstable sata6g_5 , _6 )

Note2 : F1A75-V EVO has one blue sata6g
It seems fine.

So, I claim M5A88-V EVO , F1A75-V EVO at service center to have them fixed
and it is now more better.

Conclusion = defective products

So, you dont need to waste time solving software problem.
Just replace products or claim. Done
