Hello everyone,
I recently built a new machine, and something very peculiar happens when i turn it on in the morning after unplugging it over night.

When I press the power button, everything lights up, and the case fans spin and nothing appears on screen. However, the cpu fan does not spin up, so after like 5 seconds, the machine shuts down, turns on again, and boots up normally, with the cpu fan spinning.

I am concerned as to what could be causing this problem.

Any ideas?

Thank you much!

It's likely motherboard or PSU issue. Google reviews of your motherboard - see if other people have the same problem. Did you check to be sure that your PSU is running in tolerable limits?

What PSU and motherboard are you using?

Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard, Antec Earthwatts 650 watt power supply. This problem started randomly, and hasn't existed the whole time i have had the computer. I have a puny GeForce 8400 Gfx card and a 65w processor, so I would find it hard to believe its too much juice for my power supply.

This problem only occurs when the computer has lost power and then got it back. For example, if I shut it down, and then turn it back on, it starts normally, but if I turn it off, unplug it, plug it back in and turn it on, it has this problem.

Thank you!

I'd say it's a fault in your motherboard, but do normal tests for it anyway. If it's really your motherboard, the machine should still power on weird if everything is removed except for the CPU, RAM, and MB. That includes unplugging everything else from the motherboard and the power supply. Use only one stick of RAM. See what happens.

That's normal for Gigabyte motherboards when you turn them on after being unplugged. Nothing to worry about. I think it's some sort of initialization thing they do after losing power. If you start it up without unplugging the power cord, it won't do that. These boards also do the same thing when changing some bios setting for overclocking.

Oh really? Wow. I feel stupid.

Thank you very much!

Have a great day!

Thanks,
