I have an X99A MB that came with six PSU cables for GPU. four are 8 pin and 6+2 pin. Another two, however, have an extra, shorter, 6-pin sticking out of the 6+2 side.

What are these offshoots for, and can they work with GPU that requires two 8-pin cables?

Some GPU's need only 6pin connectors.
For 8pin gpu connector you should insert 8pin or 6+2 pins, prolly the shorter 6pin is just and added extension so it would look more clear in your case, also no additional connectors would would swing around if your gpu requires 6pin.

What are these offshoots for, and can they work with GPU that requires two 8-pin cables? - no 6pin are not recommended for 8pin, probably wont be able to deliver enough power/or will overload the cables.

Please look at the photo at this link:

I"m trying to figure out what that shorter extra piece is for, and if I can still use this as a whole (the 8 pin and 6+2 pin) for my GPU, while ignoring the extra 6 pin branch
