I am using a monitor with a VGA cable in 16:9 but when I changed my cable to a Belkin one it went to 4:3 and I can't change it. Why would this happen and more importantly how do I solve it

Not all D-Sub monitor cables/connectors are the same.

The Belkin cable lacks the extra pins (or they are not wired up) which are necessary for the higher resolution that you need for that 16:9 widescreen monitor. Hence the cable is only capable of supporting 4:3 ratio resolutions, so on a widescreen monitor you get black bars at the sides.

So when buying a VGA cable you first need to check what resolutions it supports, either on the packaging or on the product page on the manufacturer's website.
