Hello,

I've got one monitor running fine, but cannot get my PC to detect a VGA screen.

System Setup (I have excluded HDMI ports):
GTX 960 - 2x Outputs; DVI-I, DVI-D
H170M-D3H-CF Motherboard - 2x Outputs; DVI-D, VGA

Monitors:
Working - DIV-D to DIV-D on the graphics card
Not Working - VGA to with VGA/DVI-D adapter on cable

What I've tried to far:

1. Connect the VGA monitor with DVI-D adapter to either output on the GPU
2. Connect the VGA monitor directly to the VGA output on the motherboard
3. Connect the VGA monitor with DVI-D adapter to the DVI-D output on the motherboard
- On all of the above the monitor fails to detect any input and stays black.

4. Connect the VGA monitor to the VGA output on my laptop
- Screen works as normal

I have a feeling I should have purchased a VGA/DVI-I adapter as the DVI-D is digital only?
Does it need the extra pins for the analog signal?
Why does it not work connecting the VGA to VGA on the motherboard output, is it because it's disabled whilst the GTX 960 is active?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, if I've omitted any details I apologise and will update.
Thanks in advance,

Rich

Solution
1. Connect the VGA monitor with DVI-D adapter to either output on the GPU
Like you said the DVI-D is digital only. And usually the VGA/DVI-D adapter is passive type, it doesn't work, you need more expensive active adapter, which costs $20 or more.

2. Connect the VGA monitor directly to the VGA output on the motherboard
3. Connect the VGA monitor with DVI-D adapter to the DVI-D output on the motherboard
Do you install the intel graphics driver yet? Also VGA/DVI-D does not work because the compatibility problem.

4. Connect the VGA monitor to the VGA output on my laptop
When you connect the monitor to laptop, because it already had the gpu driver.

And you need either vga/dvi-i adapter or active vga/dvi-d adapter.

Hey cin19, thankyou for your response.

I hadn't thought of that, will give it a shot tonight. I've only installed drivers and updates for the GTX.

Swapped the DVI-D adapter to a VGA/DVI-I adapter at the store today, hopefully this will help.

I've been trying to think of a purpose for a DVI-D / VGA adapter without an active element to it - perhaps if you already had an active converter which produced an analog output and had a DVI-D port? Seems a bit ridiculous. I'm a bit annoyed the computer shop sold it to me in the first place, when I went back one of their tech guys overheard the problem and went to find me a DVI-I / VGA adapter straight away whilst I was still arguing with their returns department. It didn't seem like the first time he'd dealt with the issue.
