VGA motherboard to Displayport monitor?

So today (long story short, I'm sitting on my ass until the MSI GTX 980ti Gaming 6G comes out) I bought a displayport-to-VGA adapter and a VGA cable from MicroCenter, believing I could link my ASUS ROG Swift (which has displayport output only) to my motherboard and use its integrated graphics (Intel 4600HD) until I get my new graphics card. HOWEVER: upon hooking up the adapter to the monitor and then the VGA cable to the adapter end and the motherboard, I got no signal. Only by linking a VGA cable to another (crappier) existing VGA monitor in my house could I get signal and actually write this lol. So, my question is, are there any cable combinations that would let me connect either HDMI/DVI/VGA to Displayport out?

Thanks! Also if anyone could speculate as to how long it will take MicroCenter to get the graphics card I mentioned that'd be great...I'm without games right now :/

Solution
Displayport uses an entirely different signaling from VGA/D-Sub video ports. For example, Displayport is digital and VGA is analogue. Proper converters exist for them, but they are "active" adapters in that they don't just move pins around, they have to convert between the two signals to make things cooperate and even then, it doesn't always work. Unfortunately, HDMI's digital signaling is different from Displayport, so the issue is unchanged with it and DVI simply uses HDMI and VGA signaling. I don't know for sure what would work with your monitor and motherboard.

One issue with these adapters, even proper converters, is that they can confuse the monitor and/or computer about what is on the other end of the converter. When you connect a monitor to a computer with VGA, the computer will be convinced that it is a VGA monitor. Connect an adapter with a Displayport monitor, and the computer should see the adapter...

However, if the computer doesn't recognize what the adapter tells the computer is there, then it won't work. It can be an issue with the graphics drivers not understanding it, with Windows not understanding it, both, or more, but the end result is you may have bought a fairly expensive paper weight for an adapter.

I don't have enough experience with using such a setup to say what parts are compatible with what systems. I know it can be done if you know exactly what parts to use, but I try to avoid such situations when I can by doing things like getting a motherboard with Displayport rather than deal with the hassle. Sorry that I can't be of more help.
