VGA port will not display

I am trying to run two external monitors off my laptop(Toshiba Satellite s855-s5378 Windows 8) from the HDMI and VGA ports. the monitor running off my HDMI works perfectly. I am Using a J5 VGA to HDMI adapter (video +audio) for the third monitor. the display settings see's the third monitor connected but will not display to it. I have already tried restarting and re-extending all the displays and still have the same results.

The box Says VGA to HDMI adapter. I was told that it is what i would need to make the VGA port on my laptop display to an HDMI port on the monitor.

and no, it still does not work with HDMI disconnected.

According to the specs, it should work.

I took the part back and got the closes thing i could find to what you recommended. http://www.microcenter.com/product/440676/VGA2HDU_VGA_to_HDMI_Adapter_with_USB_Audio_-_Power_-_Portable_VGA_to_HDMI_Converter_1080p

so far it seems to work so there must have been something malfunctioning with the other part. thank you for your help!
