VGA repair cost

My laptop suddenly stopped working. I gave it to a guy to look at. He said the battery was not working anymore (the computer would turn once he removed the battery and it was plugged in) and the VGA component was broken. By VGA I'm guessing he means graphic card. This laptop has an integrated and dedicated graphics card. I'm guessing it's the dedicated one that's broken. How much can I expect that to cost? He hasn't quoted me yet, but the country I live in is notorious for scams so I want to go in educated. Also, side question, would it be possible to just use the integrated card? The only problem I can think of is that I can't get into the BIOS to fix it (since the screen won't turn on.

Depends on the laptop and what part is actually broken and if he gets it new or used or refurbished. Honestly if the cost is more than half the price of a new laptop you'd be better off just getting a new laptop.
