vga to hdmi vs dvi-d to hdmi

Dvi-d, keep it digital and you can get cheaper passive adapters as well since you don't need to convert.

You shouldn't see any difference unless there is an issue. It's better not to complicate things and not have to convert the signal. Also to spend less money even if it is just a little and digital is better. Like it's less susceptible to interference or affected by cable and component quality which might be the cause of your blurriness.
