Vgi not working when goes through hdmi spliter

I am trying to run my monitor or tv through a hdmi port on my sony laptop. I thought I could run hdmi spliter out of my computer and branch one off to tv and the other to the monitor through hdmi to dvi cord. It doesnt seem to work. If I plug dvi from monitor to hdmi on laptop it works, but not if goes through the spliter. Same with the hdmi from tv to hdmi on my laptop. Do I need to get a powered spliter or something instead. Maybe even some sort of switch to go from 1 to 2?

First, if you use a splitter, both monitors need to run at the same resolution, are they? You will need to use the max resolution on whichever screen is lowest. If that is set properly, could be the splitter is not working or can't run in the settings and connections you are using.
