I'm about to join my first merchant ship and want a new external hard-drive for movies etc however I've been told that the vibrations from from engine / movement of the ship will quickly mess up regular HDD / SSD.
Not sure how the vibration and movement will mess up a SSD since there are no moving parts in a SSD.
I can see it effect the HDD due to the heads flying over the disks.
Agreed
SSD's do not have moving parts and will not be an issue. A mechanical drive like a HDD may have issues but I doubt the vibrations would be severe enough to harm it, in general a ship's movement is slow enough that it wouldn't cause any problems either. (unless you are in a submarine and they do an emergency blow).
Remember people have for years been using laptops with HDD's on planes, train's and buses which would probably have more direct vibration than a ship.
The original iPod's had a mechanical HDD and people would be using them out walking or jogging, having them on their arm or in their pocket.
TL;DR SSD would be guaranteed from mechanical failure but the chances of a HDD failing due to vibrations or movement on a ship are pretty slim (unless you duct tape it to the engine)

Any recommendations?
SSD in whatever size your budget and size requirements dictate.
