Video Card Not Connecting to PC

Background:
I just bought a new PC. It has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti video card. I used my 4-year old monitor which is an HP Pavilion 20fi. There was some concern in the computer store because that monitor works through a VGA cable but I just bought a VGA to HDMI adapter to hopefully address the issue (which is something to take note of because I feel it did NOT address it)

Problem:
My PC does not recognize the NVIDIA GPU at all. In the device manager though, both the default Intel GPU and the NVIDIA GPU are there. However, I cannot access the NVIDIA control panel as it says ''you are currently not using a display attached to an nvidia gpu''. I have tried re-installing the latest drivers to no avail.

Can anyone help me with this please? It would be much appreciated.

is the monitor hooked up to the gpu directly?

if the adapter does not have a power cable then it is likely not powered

monitor > vga cable > adapter > gpu (not motherboard)

you have it hooked up like this yes?
