video card taking last breath?

Two days ago my display became seriously screwed up. The colors are
very washed out, red looks like orange, everything is a little blurry,
there are gray streaks that go from the top to the bottom of my monitor,
and I have to crank the brightness way up to see this. There's also
some flickering from time to time.

My first thought was my monitor was fried. I've had it for over seven
years. I went out and bought a brand new monitor, but no change.

Now I suspect video card. I've removed it, cleaned the connections,
replaced it and there was no improvement.

My specs:

Asus CUSL2 mobo
P3 800 processor
128 MB ram
Hercules 3D Prophet II MX (dual display model, had it since Jan 2000)
with latest drivers
Win 98

I would have thought that my video card would have had a longer life
span than this!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yep, sure looks like it. Sounds similar to my old 3d Prophet ddr when
it bit the big one. You've already ruled out the monitor, now try
another vid card (borrow a known good card?) - this will verify your
mobo is ok. One more check: are you using "official" drivers off
nvidia.com or "beta" (leaked, hacked etc)? Your symptoms are a bit
extreme for a bad driver though. When the trouble started, did you
install anything (e.g. directx)? You may want to check Win98 system
file corruption (eps registry).

Some do some don't. With the chip complexity and severe
price/performance competition, it seems like a < 1 yr obsolescence cycle
has settled in. New games force speed and features over reliability.
I've got old S3 trio64/virge-dx, voodoo2, and a Diamond Promotion At-24
PCI VGA cards that all still work quite well. Unfortunately the newer
games a finally forcing me to upgrade my old Athlon 800/G4ti4800 system.

My guess would be the video card. Since you already check your monitor. You
can try a generic driver like standard vga and see if there a streak line or
blurry.

Beowulf and CapFusion,

Thanks for the tips guys. I went out and bought a new card and all is well
now. My heart says I should keep this new monitor I got but my wallet says no,
you better return it.

If your old monitor still working good, then simply return the new monitor.
