I'm looking into upgrading my PC during the holidays and I think it will be my video card. Currently I have 2 x Radeon 5770 in SLI, but this setup was a lot of trouble over the time, so I decided to change it. I have a PCI Express 3.0 motherboard and a 775 wats power supply, so I think my system is OK for either choice.
What do I do with this system? Play random games from time to time, anything for turn based strategies to the occasional FPS. I don't have much time for playing, but when I do play I want to be able to max everything, graphics wise. I have a single monitor, running at standard 1920x1028.
Now, I know this question has been asked before, I've been reading topics and opinions all week. What I never saw in those topics, and why I'm asking here, is the fact that there are various versions of the 7950, with different clocks and prices. Here is what I see on local shops:
- Radeon 7870 ranging from $335 to $382
- Sapphire ATI Radeon HD7950, 3072MB, GDDR5, 384bit, DVI, HDMI, PCI-E - 850 MHz at $411
- Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD7950, 3072MB, GDDR5, 384bit, HDMI, DVI, PCI-E - 900 MHz at $420
and then it climbs up in small steps all the way to
- MSI AMD Radeon HD7950, 3072MB, GDDR5, 384bit, DVI, HDMI, PCI-E - 880 MHz at $479

My questions are:
- just how much of a difference is between the two cards? A 7870 vs the cheapest 7950.
- same question, for the the cheapest 7950 to the most expensive 7950
- is it worth it to get the cheapest 7950 in my usage scenario, or would a 7870 allow me to run whatever I like at max settings?
PS:
- I don't bother much with OC, just default settings.
