Hi, I need help building a computer for video editing. I'll be using Sony vegas pro to edit. Using full HD and 4k footage. I have some parts that i'd like to use and currently my goal is to upgrade/add parts just to get the system up and running and leave room for future upgrading to turn it into a 1200 to 1400 range professional level video editing computer. Based on my current budget and the parts I have, who knows, maybe we can get that done now. My budget is $600 CAD. I can increase my current budget to $800 if we can get the 1200+ all inclusive professional grade video editing computer.

I have some parts:

Storage: 1tb (WD green)
Memory: 2 x 4gb sticks(G skill RIP jaws)
Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 (I know this is too much power, i'll probably sell and downgrade in the future but keep it for now i guess)
CPU: AMD Sempron 145 Sargas Single-Core
Tower/PC case: Need recommendation. Looking to keep the price as low as possible on this.

I have an external hard drive so i'm not concerned about increasing the storage space right away. The mother board has 4 slots for ram. Would adding 2 more 4gb sticks have the same effect as 2 8gb sticks? Do the new sticks I purchase have to be the same kind?

Budget is 600 CAD(Is that too much or too little?). Please keep the product links from amazon.ca and newegg.ca. I had another thread in which I got recommendations but almost all of the parts weren't available in canada.

My guess is that urgently I need CPU, GPU, RAM upgrading and a PC case. How much does CPU come into play for video editing? Would the 600 CAD budget be what is normally spent on these items when building $1200 video editing PC or is it more than that?

Thanks for the help!!

CPU is most important thing about video editing. If you planing to record games and edit them for youtube gpu is important too.

RAM: order the same as you have. (48$)

CPU: For video editing you need as much cores as you can get.
And that would be for your socket Fx-8350 (205$)

GPU: since you have a lot of W in power supply i would recommend you go with AMD
AMD FX 480 (340$): http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150774&cm_re=rx_480-_-14-150-774-_-Product

Some cooler for CPU (30$)

CASE: Cool looking but not...

CASE: Cool looking but not overpriced case. You just need look for enough space for Video card and CPU cooler. Something like this: (90$)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353110&cm_re=full_tower_case-_-11-353-110-_-Product

TOTAL: 623$

If you dont play Video games and will not edit them you do not need so strong GPU. you can go for RX 480 with 4gb

Or even older but still great GTX 960 or AMD r9 380x or r9 380.
These all are still good GPUs and will serve you. Just might not be for latest AAA games if you are recording them for youtube in 1080p @60 fps

This is list of new prices. I recommend you go visit some "used goods" stores and look to find PC case for dirty cheap price. Just look for CPU cooler space, GPU space and would be good to have lot of slots for fans so you can make good airflow (AMD is heating much more than Intel and Nvidia) You can find CPU coolers used too pretty cheap. Even this AMD CPUs you can find up to 1 year old for cheap. Just have in mind that is always good to have warranty so do not look for too old components used.

Also do not worry so much on this "Higher temperatures with AMD" they are older and it is ok for them. They are still good stuff and will serve you :)

I highly recommend saving up more money before you do this build. With the M5A99FX board you are limiting the best CPU to a FX-8350 or FX-8370 which are already outdated. They won't do very well with 4K editing. Your hard drive and RAM are very slow. The 1333 RAM would slow down the FX-8350. You should sell all your parts, then make a new Intel build (Skylake Z170 or Broadwell-e X99 would be best)

Dignified
As a dull build with everything included (except audio) this build is what I have come up with.

Thanks a lot! That's very helpful! As far as the ram goes, just add 2 more 4gb sticks right?

Hmm, interesting. How much would a complete intel built with skylake or broadwell-e cost? Not including the monitor/keyboard/mouse.
