I just received an early Christmas present...a Canon GL2! Oh boy! I'm wondering about editing programs. The Pinnacle DV 8 is highly recommended and is, of course, cheaper than the Adobe Premier. The question: is there a difference in the final image quality output of these two programs or is the end quality of the image the same? Thanks!

You've got an excellent pro DVcam. What a nice present. 😎

Since DV is purly digital, there's no difference in the final image quality output of all programs if you only want to capture, edit, and then export the videos back to DV tape.

However, if you'll be doing re-compression or conversion of the videos, say export them to DVD or VCD format, then the quality will be different among the programs.

Here are some great sites that might help you get started:

Have fun.

Thank you for the encouragement. I plan on using the camera for a video class and needed a high quality image camera within a limited price range. The GL2 comes highly recommended. I have already checked into the sites and they prove to be very interesting! Have a good holiday season. ByPick http://www.pickeringstudio.com

All right, now that I've checked a little further. The Pinnacle DV 8 ($129.00) takes care of the Mpeg 2 compression factor to get it to DVD. Will the results on the DVD look as good as a Mpeg 2 compression from Premier or another similar high value program? I don't need a lot of extra effects or fluff, just basic image quality.

I am using Premier6.5 and the result on Mpeg2 compression it provides is very good. I haven't used other software and hence can't give you a comparison. If you don't need a lot of extra effects, the Pinnacle DV 8 is pretty good for your need. I've seen some positive reviews regarding this product.

Good points, only thing I would add is that Pinnacle is more newbie friendly but Adobe is very good too.
