I can see this being big if executed properly. Yes you can already watch most anything you want online right now, but resources are mostly scattered. It would be nice if you could just type in what you want to watch and bam, you get it.

I agree that it could definitely be convenient. However, knowing Google, there will probably be something more in the fine print of whatever Terms of Service contract they make you agree to before you'll be able to use their service. Definitely worth keeping an eye on though.

Yahoo says google isn't anything but a search engine but amazingly they are one of the most innovative companies going right now..

It'll be interesting to see how this would work though. It may just be like trying to find something on the Internet now. Just Google it and see what comes up. If that's all it does for you then it's not really bringing anything together. However, if they did collaborate things from all over and have things more conveniently accessible then it would be a major improvement on the way things are done.

Allowing internet companies access to every niche and inch of your electronic home via an open invitation as opposed to trying to fight their way through your firewall and anti-spyware, will be big for them, their advertisers but also the government... it's not bad enough the NSA collects 4 PB of data per month from US citizens not to mention spying on everyone else, but there's always the possibility of storing monitoring code on these new TVs as well. At least for now we still have our thoughts to ourselves, as long as we don't go beyond thinking something.

Hmm... Boxee [1] vs. Google TV. Who is going to be the winner?! For now I am going to stick with Linux+XBMC.

Yes, but what percentage of people do you think will go to the extent of setting this up(Even if they could figure it out). I'm not saying that it is difficult, but then again you have to remember how many people lack any technical know-how what so ever. People would pay for this just for the convenience that it represents.

Partnership with Sony for internet TV????

I really don't like the sounds of this if Sony is involved, especially if it should be with broadcast content. Cause once everything gets setup and ready for the public, Sony will probably stick a monkey wrench in the viewing contract that'll require the viewer to pay more for internet TV than Cable or Satellite currently costs.

Just look at how much Sony charges to watch one of their movies online through their viewing service. About $25 a pop which I find is not worth it. You can go out and buy the BlueRay for that price or the DVD for less or better yet, get the BlueRay from NetFlix, then return it or just stream it from NetFlix.

This needs time to mature. It's coming out and is nothing really more than some simplification of what can already be done. TV needs to be more internet based before I give a care.

Honestly, youtube on your TV??? I'm sorry, I'll pass on that one for now.

I can do most anything they did by using an ultraportable laptop, HDMI cable, and a good HDTV.

However, I do think Google is ahead of the curve here. Just too far ahead for now.

The success of Google TV will depend on the price point and how successful the return rate of the search results will be.
It will fail if its no less expensive than a custom built HTPC (which are pricey, if you want a decent one) and casual non tech savvy customers will be turned off if whatever they type just gives them search results full of trailers and links displaying "the video has been removed".
The advantages Google has over Boxee, Apple TV and other similar devices is the simple to us UI (you cant get more simple than "googling" your shows). So if they get the price and functionality down the people may love it...

Lmao, they make it seem like watching TV is the most stressful, difficult task possible.

Why don't I just connect my PC to my TV like I already do? Then I don't need to waste money on their hardware.

It'll catch on, as nothing Google does ever fails, I just think it's a tad... odd.

Sony will supply televisions based on Intel Atom CPUs and Logitech is designing remotes and wireless keyboards that will work with the smart TVs.

Oh what a wonderful world we live in with creature such as fairy and leprechaun.
Who is going to design the couch? Microsoft? oh no it has to be Apple called iCouch :)

I have been running a PC on all my TV's for many years now and am able to stream movies recorded from one central PC to all other PC's, I hope they do a good job of integrating the Google TV to the PC. I assume they plan to allow access to a few shared media folders but the only problem I see is formats, will they be able use AVI, MP4, MKV?

I think the only reason it took so long for this to happen is because people are no longer "PC Dumb". My parents (55+) finally got hooked on the PC, now it's impossible to get them off!

Agree. Actually I am quite surprised that it took so long to get here. As others has mentioned already the WebTV is very old idea. The only real obstacle I see is outdated Cable TV business model. And the success of Google TV will depend on the cable operators adoption. If they had recognized that their current model is sinking ship they will jump on board, but if they decide to stick with their setup-boxes Google TV will fail and progress in USA will be postponed for 5-10 years.

The timing couldn't be better.

Sites like Youtube and Hulu are getting as popular as Cable TV, and while some of us are building and configuring mediacenters, tv tuners and laptops with hdmi cables there are still a lot of people who's technical expertise extends as far as a tv remote control and typing in things like "drunk guy coachella" in a YouTube search bar.

I can see GoogleTV bridging the gap. It's all about convenience. The price will also factor in heavily to the success of this.

So this is how Google attempts to make money other than advertisements in search.

Aren't people already enjoying Google TV? I think it's called Home Theater PC (HTPC).
