This is an unfair test since the XFX Radeon RX 580 8G 2048SP has a clear advantage over the stock GeForce GTX 1060 3GB. The test would have been much more fair and accurate had they used a stock GeForce GTX 1060 6GB card. The GeForce GTX 1060 3GB card does not enough ram to run games at ultra high graphic settings at 1080p, at least in some cases as I have the GTX 1060 6GB version and I have had the rare game tell me I need more ram if I want to turn up the graphics in games at 1080p some times. If they want to do an honest comparison of the two graphics cards it should be redone as Radeon RX 580 2048SP vs stock GeForce GTX 1060 6GB card at 1080p for gaming.

Maybe they're replacing the product lines

rx 580 8gb 2048SP replacing the current rx 570
the rumored rx 590 replacing the current rx 580

@Druidsmark according to the article the 580 2048SP is in the same price range as the 1060 3GB, making it a fair comparison. If the 3GB card doesn't have enough VRAM, that's a legitimate downside that I think is valid to demonstrate through benchmarks.

The 1060 6GB is ~10% faster than the 3GB version before even taking into account the differing VRAM amounts. It competes against the 580. The 1060 3GB competes against the 570, and now the 580 2048SP (in China).

Uninteresting, these are mostly games AMD plays better on anyways. There's nary a game at 1080p where the extra 5GB will make a difference, but its nice to have I guess...

How is it "unfair" that the Radeon card has nearly 3 times the VRAM for the same price? As has been said, the 1060 6GB and 3GB are not the same card, as the 3GB version has 10% of its cores disabled, similar to how the RX 570 / RX 580 2048SP is a cut-down RX 580. If Nvidia wants to cheap out on the VRAM but still charge just as much for the card, that's their own fault. This is a more than two year old card that is still selling for at about the same price it launched for. Some games already show performance limitations from having only 3GB of VRAM, and that will only cause more of a performance impact in the future as game requirements climb. That's not to say that the 1060 3GB is a bad card, and it does at least have an advantage in terms of power draw under load, but it's only fair to compare cards against others in the same price range.

And on that note, at online stores in the US right now, it's possible to find the RX 570 (even the 8GB version) for about the same price or in some cases less than a 1050 Ti. Only the RX 570 gets about 50% higher frame rates, making it absolutely obliterate the competition in terms of performance. It's also possible to get the (full) RX 580 for around the same price as a 1060 3GB, despite the 580 performing at the same level as the full 1060 6GB card. I suspect there will likely be price drops for Nvidia's mid-range cards as well though, as we (hopefully) near their next generation of mid-range models.

I must say that I don't really get the point of the RX 580 2048 though, since it appears to be pretty much a rename of the RX 570. Perhaps they're just doing this to match Nvidia's naming scheme used for their 1060 3GB in that market, but you would think they would have done that long ago if that's their intention. Perhaps these cards have some other as-yet unknown changes, like being on 12nm though?

The 1060 6GB is too expensive. Not unfair at all. In fact it was clever marketing by nVidia. Get all the good press for the REAL 1060, but actually the one people buy is 10 percent slower.

Link to a place selling one new for under $250. I'm pretty sure they stopped making that model. For the price of a 3GB 1060, you're practically in full 2304 shader RX 580 territory.

If you're gonna get a 1060, you're FAR better off with a superior 6GB model.

What about comparing it to the new 1060 with 6GB GDDR5X?

It's only fair to compare the RX 590 to the new 1060 instead of trying to score a victory with the 3GB version LOL

GTX 1060 6gb $250 with Monster Hunter. Rx580 8gb $225. Not the one shown in article. That is a more fair comparison. No one really wants to GTX 1060 3 gig model so there's no point in even comparing the two. I personally believe that whoever buys the GTX 1060 3 gig model doesn't really know what they're doing.

AMD simply missed the party boat, most 1060s' draw 120w and can be used with mass market PCs' manufactured in the last 10 years with an OEM 300w or greater power supplies. The 150w AMD card like the 1070 150w card always requires a PSU upgrade for the mass market.

Did I actually read a comment saying unfair have to test 1060 6gb due to higher memory? You know the 3gb vs 6gb has more than just different memory amounts right? If it's not fair it's due to being a lower card overall, not the memory.

It's fine because 1060 3gb is being compared to a lower tier card in the 570 which falls somewhere between a 1050ti and 1060 3gb in performance. It's a weird spot for this card because a 560 is a bit lower performance than a 1050ti, but a 570 is significantly better. They just made the 570 too good of a card, definitely the best GPU under 200$

It's like saying you can't compare a 580 4gb to a 1060 3gb.. well they sell for the same amount so why not and a 570 8gb sells for less than what a 480 4gb sold for. If you want most accurate comparison probably use rx 480 4gb to 1060 3gb.

If you say it's unfair that's fine, but not due to higher memory. Now you can make a case to test with settings adjusted so memory isn't an issue and then with settings on max, sure that's fine. If you need to do this then we already know what card wins. You could test both games on say medium preset, but you also need to test maxed out because of so many different reasons.

What if in game Y 1060 3gb gets 83fps on medium and then 43 on ultra due to the memory, but a 570 8gb gets 83fps on medium and 64 on ultra. We can't just say it's invalid because it has more memory, they both cost 180$, but one will run ultra at higher fps, it's very much valid.

Now they didn't do this, but the complaint was that it shouldn't be compared period.

... Why are you talking about the RX 590? That's not the focus of the article...

No cigars handed out here. Lol. This is like comparing a healthy squirrel with another squirrel missing a thumb. Let's boost that 3gb card with a 6gb one. Or compare a 4gb 580 to the 3gb 1060. Then how many nuts they've collected and compare how fat they want their wallets.

@Rexxer Why is this so difficult for people to understand. A 570 can have 800gb and guess what, if it falls in the same price point or even less than a 1060 3gb then it's a fair comparison. Just because nvidia made a card that sells for over 200$ and only gave it 3gb it's on them. The AMD equivalent just happens to have 4gb or 8gb. This one has 8gb. It sells for the same or less, it is a fair comparison.

If you are going to complain then do it for the right reasons. A 6gb 1060 is a completely different card that varied greatly in performance. There was a lot of controversy when they release because of how much different they were.

Technically they are comparing a lower model AMD to higher model Nvidia. So we shouldn't compare a 8gb 570 to a 4gb 1050ti even though you can buy a 570 in the u.s for the same price?

I get it nvidia fanboys are unhappy, but look at selling price and it's a fair comparison. Currently rx570 8gb are selling for 20$ less than 1060 3gb and the exact same price as a 1050ti. They are selling at only 150$. This is all time low pricing on 3gb 1060s thanks to AMD creating good competition.

Now if the card in the article sells for more than a 1060 3gb in China and the price is closer to a 1060 6gb then by all means test it vs a 6gb. I don't know the pricing there. Not sure how much different the u.s 570 8gb is from the Chinese one as well, but it sounds like the Chinese 580 8gb is just a 570 8gb rebranded

One minor victory and the Nivedia fan boys start freaking out. It's their website, zealots, they can compare whatever they like. If Nivedia wants to overprice their wares that's their choice. They seem to be comparing cards based on a simmilar price point not ram. I love the fact that one minor partial victory has you clowns freaking out. You remind me of my ex roommate and his apple. It was overpriced and had some advantages due to very limited spyware and virus selection. As a result he thought it was superior and heactually he was superior as well. Every once in a while one of his friends would have a computer problem. After he got done with it I would breifly do research online and actually solve the problem. Man those times were sweet. I would be drinking the thanks for helping beer AND I got to see him taken down a peg. Pretty Fing sweet. Anyway long story short their fanboys feelings of superiority stem from their products perception that they are superior in the marketplace. Due to this reality they are psychologically incapable of admitting anything short of complete supremely or it will shatter their own deluded sence of superiority. And without this they will be stuck with the realization that they may be arrogant, abnoxious loosers with far less knowledge and capability then they would care to admit. In short apple is akin to Nivedia, pretty and overpriced, as well as being marketed towords people with inferiority issues.

So a buffed AMD 580 out performs a stock 1060. Wow how useful was that? Try default to default. Or use a 1060 with 6GB. But a tweaked 8GB vs 3GB... Come on...

It's clear what the testers intent is.

Well said!

It's a cut down (weaker) 580 that's on par with a 570, not a "buffed" 580.

Seriously, is this thread just full of trolls, or do this many people really fail to understand that comparing this card with a 1060 3GB rather than a 6GB makes sense?

Why did you compare the 580 to the Nvidia 1060 3GB, and not the the 1060 6GB which would be a more like to like comparison. It can't be cause of the price, as if you shop around the price between the 2 cards, is not that much. So that leads me to believe you didn't as the bench marks would be different.

Did you even bother to read the article, or is your reading comprehension just that poor? The RX 580 2048SP, is little more than an RX 570 with a higher boost clock.
