Hi,

I am running a Nvidia Geforce Ti 4600. Win XP Home. P4 2.3 Gig, 512 RD
RAM Rambus (1066). Recently I upgraded my video drivers to the latest set
56.72. My comp appears perfectly alright and everything seems to work
super quick.

I do not normally do any video work, however, I noticed that the
introduction video of Age of Empires now almost stutters along and is not
smooth or quick as it used to be. It would appear that the video card is
not working as it should be.

Any suggestions ???

thanks for any help given

Galm

Latest doesn't always mean the best. You may have to revert back to the old
drivers.

For the GeForce 4 series, the newest drivers don't seem to work very well.
People have had the best results with the 41.09s, 44.03s, and 45.23s. I use
the 45.23s, and have no problems whatsoever with them. You can find them on
nVidia's site, in the older drivers area.

With that older non-FX card you should be using the 45.23 driver for
stability. NOT the 5x.xx or 6x.xx drivers which are for the DX9 capable
cards, which yours is not.

hmmm. How do you turn on the application specific settings in 45.23 then?

Thanks for the help Dave

I was advised by Leadtek, the Video Card manufacturer, to upgrade to DX9
which is rather a puzzle. Will this give me problems?

Many thanks

You keep spouting this rubbish, and appear to have failed to take the advice
I've posted in the past and read the release notes for the drivers. The
drivers support all nVidia GPUs back to the TNT2 and Vanta, and include
feature changes to non hardware specific parts of the installation like
nView. Also, the drivers have fixes even for older cards - or example, the
56.64 drivers and higher fix the black back screen issue for Command and
Conquer Generals on the GF2 under XP. The 56.72 has been the most stable
driver I've run on a Ti4200, and cured all the problems I had with Far Cry.
Stating that the drivers are for the DX9 cards only serves to confuse people
who don't know better.

For those who haven't read the notes:

I waited a long time to install the DX9 runtime after it came out under the
guise of "don't fix it if it ain't broken". Since I've installed DX9, I
haven't noticed any problems.
