The last few months, while gaming or just sitting in windows, surfing the web, etc. my screens (I have 2) will go black and my computer freezes. I know this because if sound is playing at the time, it will freeze and fast loop. After this happens, about half the time, the videocard fan will go max speed and really loud. Other times it won't. I have to hold the power button down to turn off and reboot.
At first, I thought it may be the videocard overheating but that's definitely not the case as I have checked temps. Thought it may be dust but I opened it up and dusted everything, took it all apart, bought a more spacious case with more air flow. Put it all back together. This stopped the issue for a few weeks but now it's happening again and worse. It's gotten to the point where I can no longer use my computer for more than a minute or 2. I keep trying to take out the videocard and blow out the dust/reconnect the power but it's doesn't make things better.
I remember the first time I put my build together I had the exact same problem and it was due to the videocard not being seated properly in the PCI-e port. I snapped it in properly and the problem never occurred again for more than 2 years until recently.
Therefore it is likely a connection problem, but I don't know of it's the videocard or perhaps the PCI-e port on the motherboard.
My build is a mini itx. 650w corsair power supply. Gtx 570 video card, gigabyte h67n motherboard, i7-2600k CPU, h50 cooler, 16gb ram. The ram is new but otherwise everything else is about 2.5 years old.
I doubt it is the PSU as 650w seems like more than enough.
Anyone experience anything similar?
Thanks.
