I know 840M is low end graphic card but I don't think this is performing like this. I bought new laptop (Lenovo z50-70 (59-429607) 4GB Nvidia 840M graphic card) and when I'm watching HD/FHD videos on VLC Player (this is the player I used mostly) it is shuttering/lagging sometimes. I know my laptop display is 1080p and I would like to experience FHD on my laptop but unfortunately this problem came.

I checked in Nvidia Geforce experience as it is not using VLC (I think it is using Intel Integrated graphic card) and I want to make Nvidia graphic card to utilize in VLC.

Like I did in AMD graphic cards (till now I used this) I right click on my computer and searching for option to adjust video settings but unfortunately here I'm finding only 3D settings and in that I added VLC program and I would like to set graphic card as Nvidia instead of Intel but Nvidia option just disabled.

Can anybody tell me how to use this graphic card both for playing videos and games (I never found any problem with games and I think because here it is using Nvidia GPU) and provide me suitable tweaking settings..?

Some useful specs:

GPU: Nvidia 840M - 4GB
RAM: 8GB
CPU: Intel i5-4210U
Nvidia Driver : 347.52

Note: those who used AMD and NVidia can you please explain these options in terms of AMD Control Manager(optional) and also I updated GPU driver in Nvidia Geforce experience and it is up to date.

Solution
1) Try using K-Lite Standard instead which will launch WMPC-HC media player (if it does not then right-click the video file and say "open with"-> "Default player" and chose "WMPC-HC" (64 version or not doesn't really matter. If you have 32-bit Windows that won't be an option.

That will apply to all videos with the same extension so you'll need to repeat if you see other videos that don't show the same KLite icon.

2) Video stutter:
Video only stutters if:
a) Video is decoded by CPU but CPU is not powerful enough. In that case you want to use a hardware decoder from your GPU but your CPU should be powerful enough.

b) Software problem.
I've found KLite works much better than VLC for me.

c) Bad...
In win8 you can right click the program and select
"Run with Graphics Processor" then select "HIgh-end Nvidia"
Or you can go to Nvidia control panel and go to "manage 3D settings"
"program settings", then "select program to customize."
If VLC is not on the list then click "ADD" and find the .exe file
then "select the preffered graphics processor for this program"
and select the 840M.
This option is available on most Nvidia control panels. Im using
software version 8.1.760.0

z50-70 is known for heating problems. Check the idle and onload temps of the cpu/gpu. Also check the memory and gpu usage in task manager tab and disable any unwanted programs from the autostart list. Clean the PC with ccCleaner might as well.

c) Bad video.
Not much you can do there except attempt to recode using Handbrake.

*The RECOMMENDED method is to use the CPU which is how K-Lite installs by default. It's universally more compatible with video formats whereas the video decoder method can have problems if the video isn't encoded properly.

3) NVidia Optimus:
I'm not sure I'd want to add a video player to the list to switch to the NVidia GPU unless absolutely necessary. If it's an issue with your CPU being not powerful enough (open Task Manager and monitor CPU usage showing a graph for each core. If the video stutters but none of the cores hit 100% usage it's not a problem with CPU processing power thus no need for hardware decode (other than reduced FAN NOISE).

Your Intel GPU probably has VIDEO DECODE capabilities as well. You can go into WMPC-HC once installed then "Settings"-> "Internal Filters"

You'll see transform filters such as "H264" which you can select then save. If you then launch a video which uses that video codec it will be decode by the hardware decoder from the GPU not by the CPU. Depending on your CPU that might mean say 50% down to 20% total CPU usage (varies a lot).

(Trying to use your NVidia GPU to decode might be problematic. For one thing you'd need to have that GPU launch every time you run a video by adding WMPC-HC to the Optimus list. If you installed K-Lite using the Intel CPU then you'd have to make sure the transform filters are selected when running from the NVidia GPU).

SUMMARY:
Sorry if I got too technical. Basically I'd try K-Lite (WMPC-HC player) using the default install settings and if there's no problems just leave it alone. If you still get stutter try using the transform filters.

And again, I would not mess with assigning the NVidia GPU. You probably have video decoding via the Intel GPU so I can't think of much benefit to the NVidia GPU instead.

Solution

I'm using windows 8.1 here I click the right click -> Nvidia Control Panel-> Manage 3D settings -> VLC alreadly present then I'm trying to select the processor as Nvidia but it is not allowing (means not able to view drop down box because it is disabled to integrated graphics only)

I played Black Flag and FarCry 4 nearly 4 hours each but I didn't notice any heat problem (I observed on my laptop keyboard and it is not heated). I'm using CCCleaner for clearing PC and also I have 8GB RAM out of this 6.2 GB always usable and CPU Usage reaching upto 0.7GHz-2.6GHz but problem is same and I think some where I have to enable this option (to link video player and GPU). If you know can you please share this

Thank you for such a nice explanation and I'll download K-Lite and I'll check that. About video problem I played same video in 1366x768 resolution laptops and it is working fine and most of my video resolutions are 1920x1080 only.

One thing this WMPC-HC and Media player classic are same? If not, can you please provide download link of that player and if it is same than compared to VLC, MPC producing more colored picture which sometimes looks good and sometimes too bad.
