I think it might actually be the end of this thing's life cycle (it's pretty old). Lately, I've been having trouble getting the thing to stay on.

I have nothing plugged into it other than the computer itself. When I turn it on, it beeps, shows the desktop, then I lose picture, though the monitor does stay on. I do not get any kind of message about it losing its signal, though it does give me that message when I set the computer to just have one display. Here's a short video of me trying to get the stupid thing to work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CYs0ibvSGQ.

CPU: AMD Zambezi 3.6GHz Quad-Core
PSU: Antec 850W
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6850
MOBO: MSI 990XA-GD55
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB

I don't have a link for the monitor in question, it was a free gift from a friend about three years ago, but the model is ViewSonic VX1935WM-3; I'm plugged in via DVI and there is no option for HDMI.

Solution
Usually that means some sort of power malfunction. If you feel bold you can try to disassemble the monitor by taking off the back of it to look at the capacitors which 3 years ago I got donated 20 of these not HD but fairly large hp monitors and they had the same issue as you described but their problem was 2-4 bad capacitors on its internal power supply, once I used my tools to remove and swap the blown caps the monitors powered up just fine again. If you have a monitor with a brick power supply you could try switching that with one from ebay first, but I can't guarantee anything. But if you have something wrong with like the panel itself or another major component you are going to be looking at a replacement

That sounds well beyond my means, looks like I'm doomed to go back to having one monitor for a while. :'(

does the power cable have kind of a brick looking thing in the middle of it? or is it just one regular looking cord without the power supply on it? It could be a quick fix by ordering a cheap one from ebay, but I would say that would be a 30% chance of actually working.

Nope, just a three-prong power cord. Looks like this one is down and out. :'(

Was about to log for the night then I saw your post in update thing. But yeah that sucks, you probably could get a good $25-40 bucks off ebay for it, a lot of people who work with that stuff eat up dead monitors on ebay. Just say you believe it has a problem with the power supply.
