Viewsonic vp230mb

Hi.
I have been following the board for some time now and have found it very informative.

I am interested in purchasing the Viewsonic vp230mb, but have not seen much discussion about it, only the VG191.

So, I thought I would post a note here to find out if anyone has any experience with the vp230mb?

I am mostly interested in using it for gaming (online MMoRPGs), using DVI with a Visiontek 6964 Ti 500.

I can see by following the board here, the compaq 7020 is highly thought of, but I have really become accustomed to the 20' viewable screen size of my current CRT, so I dont think I want to drop down to 17' viewable.

Any suggestions or comments about > 18inch viewable panels would be greatly appreciated.

And thanks to everyone for posting great feedback on your lcd experiences it helps many of us trying to make an informed educated purchase.

The reason there is not much talk about that particular LCD is because it is priced at about 4500 dollars. A little too steep if you ask me. I am sure it's cheaper than 4500 in other places, but I doubt it goes much below 3000. But as for gaming, I'd say it's a very good choice. I mean, this is Viewsonic's abosulte best LCD, their flagship one.

can't think of any reason why this panel would differ performance-wise from the 191, since spec's are about equal.

Keep in mind that a a 1600x1200 res. may be less than ideal for some games...and that for gaming in general good CRTs outperform great LCDs. Those 3W speakers will really add to your gaming experience too! Note Viewsonic says "the VP230mb lends itself well to engineering applications and standard business applications."

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice; In practice, there is.

I'm sure it could be used for games (given u have a powerful enough vid card), but obviously such a costly monitor would not be aimed towards the gaming community b/c the price.

In another thread you where talking about MVA technology not being very good for gaming(for instances). I looked into this and for the most part I now really agree. This monitor is built on MVA technology, aswell it has a 25ms response. I dont know that I would recommend it for this reason. Like its been said before, it really depends on your personal preference. So people notice ghosting more then others.
If you dont mind going down on the size an inch or two. I think you could find a monitor with a faster response time, etc. I wish I could offer a specific link right now to give you an example. I already will be looking for this feature so if I find something I will post a link.

Just as note. Dont quote me on teh MVA being bad. I have mixed feelings about it now. I hopethat someone with more insight, or personal experince can post about either this monitor or MVA.

Ya, he's talking about MVA. I think what is making people a little hesitant to go w/ MVA is b/c it seems that the reviews all seem to say monitors w/ MVA don't perform as well (THG review, the one posted about the Planar, etc). We shall see what the future holds.....

Uh....not sure. The VG191 uses MVA, and I didn't see any probs with it at all. I would like to see that article you are talking about Flame.

THG had a review, and also in theis section (belive it's still visible) there was a post about a bunch of reviews of LCD's- check those out.

Didn't say anything about MVA causing problems....

But he still didn't say it caused the probs. But I can see your point man. I wonder if it's the MVA that causes the ghosting on LCD's like the VG191 even though the response time is low.

MVA doesn't cause ghosting - it 'causes' wide viewing angles, high contrast and brightness - and faster response times (I think)- so it is a good thing. Its not a perfect thing, but it is as good as any current LCD technology.

Ghosting is caused by slow response times. Even the fastest LCDs commonly available (20-25ms)are still too slow for 'picky' gamers. There may be some additional "issues" between certain panels and video card / driver combinations.

I haven't read it closely but doesn't the THG review mostly cover LCDs with response times in the 40ms range?

That article did not say MVA ghosted more than TN - it said TN produced more color hues (at least with a GF2..).
He also said TN was a better value than more expensive MVA technology. FWIW: an Eizo 18" is $1616 and a Viewsonic 19" is $914.

Yeah....they just need to achieve faster response times. That's what it comes down to. Sheesh, but you'd think buy now technology would allow CRT's to go down big time in depth...
