Last year I had some trouble getting my ViewSonic vx2758-c-mh monitor to properly run at 144Hz in Windows, which was fixed by running the AMD pixel clock patcher and creating a custom resolution, as seen here.

I've had no problems with this solution up until recently when I noticed that the display was only running at 120Hz. I tried the same steps again but to no avail, and have tried running Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) to set 144Hz, reinstalling drivers, and a few other things, but Windows shows nothing higher than 120Hz. I've noticed that AMD's custom resolution tool was somewhat glitchy when trying to use it, so could a recent update possibly have caused this? (My GPU is an r9 380).

As a side note, I first noticed Windows only showing 120Hz directly after changing my display resolution (to test something in a program I was using), but not sure if this was the actual moment when I lost 144Hz.
