Hello All

I think I have a virtual memory issue--but i'm not positive on it

Tried setting it once already to Custom size, and Minimum and Max the same, Games crashed alot more with that, so set it back to system managed, only had 1 crash in Battlefield 2042 late last night after that.

My boot M.2 is Samsung 990 Evo Plus HMB Drive 1TB
My Game M.2 is Samsung 990 Pro 1TB
Samsung 860 Evo 1TB is Storage drive

Honestly i shouldn't even be using Virtual Memory that much.

If i need to upgrade RAM, then will take any recommendations for whatever would be the best RGB Ram for my MSI B650 VC Wifi Rev 1.0 Motherboard
Currently have Teamgroup DDR 5 5600mhz 2x16 Sticks, totaling 32GB

Virtual Memory issue

Your OS is set to automatically manage the virtual ram for your platform, you're good as is.
Honestly i shouldn't even be using The Virtual Memory that much
You're wasting your resources focusing on Virtual Memory.

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

I noticed you have specs listed in your sig space. Sig space specs can and will change over time, when that happens, this thread and it's corresponding suggestions and advices will be rendered moot to the end user in the same boat as you're in now. So if you will, please include them in your thread's body.

Currently have Teamgroup DDR 5 5600mhz 2x16 Sticks, totaling 32GB
Got a link to the ram kit used?

Games crashed
Please elaborate what you're meaning to convey with the term crash. Game exits to desktop GUI? System reboots when gaming? BSoD's? Include a list of all titles taxed on your system.

My boot M.2 is Samsung 990 Evo Plus HMB Drive 1TB
My Game M.2 is Samsung 990 Pro 1TB
Samsung 860 Evo 1TB is Storage drive

Might want to pass on a screenshot of what you see on Disk Management.

Well when it crashed--it was a total sysem lock up--no system response at all, had to press reset button on the case to get back into Windows and reload into game, then it ran fine

No link to Ram Kit used, as Had it built for me as i'm not that experienced building a system. Decided to change platforms from Intel to AMD Ryzen 7 7700X build for first time

Specs are as follows
Lian Li LanCool 216 ARGB
MSI Pro B650 VC Wifi Rev 1.0
Ryzen 7700X with 120MM Air Cooler (Installed by Shop, don't know the brand or model of it though)--Terrible at Installing Coolers, so hope this one stays adequate for a long time
Radeon 7800XT OC 16GB
Samsung 990 Evo Plus (in M.2 Slot 1)
Samsung 990 Pro 1TB (in M.2 Slot 2)
and Sata Samsung 860 Evo (Extra Storage)
Power Supply: HighPower 750 Watt, (might change out sometime to a more quality one, Seasonic, Corasir possibly) Age of the PSU is not that old, purchased system in July 2024, dust cleaned out every month, and Filter cleaned
OS Windows 11 Pro 24H2 26100.3037
and Monitor ASUS VG249Q1R 1080P 165Hz on DisplayPort
Bios version: 7D78v1G (Last final UEFI bios for this board, there is 2 more betas, but waiting for those to go Final)
System was clean Installed on Christmas 2024, when i installed the newer M.2 Drives

All Games Installed
Battlefield 2042
Firefighter Simulator the Squad
Police Simulator: Patrol
American Truck Simulator
Euro Truck Simulator 2
Forza Horizon 5
Firestorm 64Bit Release Viewer (For SecondLife--3rd party viewer)

Other software installed
Acronis True Image for System backup
SignalRGB (To Control the RGB Lights) as Mystic Light didn't work too well with my Standard User account to work with the RGB Lights
EA App
Steam
Discord
Skype
Office 365
Malwarebytes Premium 5.2.5.158
VirtualDj (For Djing in SecondLife at times)
VLC Player
Samsung Magician
Microsoft PC Manager
Windows Defender Primary Security
AMD Adrenlin software, Video driver 24.12.1 (Released on December 5th)
AMD Chipset Driver 6.10.17.152

Gave as much detail as i possibly can

Extra Storage drive only storing The Music Files, and Misc files currently, if need be i can move that stuff to an external and discontinue use of the Sata drive if it came to it

see if you have a minidump file, put it on a server, share it for public access and post a link.

generally, for a lock up where windows keeps running but the screen does not refresh: I would be looking at problems with the GPU drivers.

too many causes for a generic lockup. best to look for a windows diagnostic minidump file.
common causes would be, overclocking, overheating of gpu or cpu.

generally, if the cpu detects the problem you will get a bugcheck.
windows if windows is still running it will often bugcheck with a watchdog timer going off. (different timeouts for different components)

generic fix: update bios, update motherboard drivers
remove overclock drivers. then reinstall the graphics driver from GPU vendor.

I would also make sure your system can make a minidump. google how to force a windows memory dump using a keyboard. You can make the registry settings then force a memory dump and make sure the file is produced.
for problems in virtual memory, you can google how to make windows delete the pagefile.sys on system reboot.
then make the registry change. The pagefile will be deleted and recreated on each bootup. This is useful for cases of malware infecting the pagefile. or for pagefile on bad blocks of ssd.
fixes would be update the chipset drivers, or update ssd firmware.

Here is the shareable link for 1 Minidumps i did have, surprisingly wasn't too many in there at all. Played Battlefield 2042 last night for 3 rounds and it did not totally freeze up, and hasn't for at least the last 2-3 games that i played

M.2 Firmware is up to date currently, i check that regularly, as well as Motherboard Chipset drivers

I'll admit back in July 2024 when first got this PC was following Youtube guides to optimize processor cooling, and performance with Curve optimizer, though back then it crashed a ton while just doing gaming in SecondLife. Finally i updated UEFI bios, then just set PBO Max Temp 85C, and left rest of it alone, besides Turned on Expo like it was setup from factory.

I never did clear the CMOS back then, as i figured well a Load Factory defaults in UEFI bios, and redoing some of the settings was enough, maybe im wrong on that--not sure.

((this is my first Ryzen build ever))

was the only overclock driver installed.

3 windows files did not match checksums but these are public sourced files so you may have a 3rd party version.

all the other windows files looked ok.

the memory dump only showed a access violation on clean up on exit of your game. At exit windows tries to clean up all of the used resources that the game had use in the pagefile.sys, on of the resources had a bad value in the list. This could be a game bug, it could be a bad area on the ssd. the system was up for 1 day 9.5 hours.

problem was in a virtual address descriptor.

I would delete the pagefile.sys and check the drive for errors.
looks like your various drivers are mostly up to date.
--------------
Processor Version AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 8-Core Processor
Processor Voltage 8dh - 1.3V
External Clock 100MHz
Max Speed 5550MHz
Current Speed 4500MHz

initial Microcode Version: 00000000:0a601209
Cached Microcode Version: 00000000:00000000

(i think the ryzen master driver overrides Microsoft cpu microcode updates.)

(you might update directly from AMD. it should not effect this problem)

my only guess, is that it is a game bug or the pagefile was written to a spot that went bad on the ssd.

I have seen chipset bugs that can corrupt a pagefile over sleep/wake cycles.
for intel cpu I see them on the buglists but AMD does not seem to list them where I can find the cpu buglist.
sorry, this is not going to be of much help.

I don't even have Ryzen Master installed on the current install though, unless the driver came with the Chipset drivers

Nor do i use Sleep, i typically let the system idle over night, or do some task over night like system backup, occasionally stream relaxation audio to my bluetooth ear buds, or other maintenance tasks

I will delete the current page file, as well as check drive for errors, and guess go from there in this case then.

Update: Possibly Fixed

First i set No Paging File, and restarted, then scheduled C NVMe chkdsk (no errors found) then after it rebooted from finished the chkdsk error check. I then reset the page file, but instead of selecting Automatially managed Pagefile for all drives, i selected System Managed on C Only.

So far staying at Recommended amount of 4877MB Currently Allocated 4877MB as well

when I refer to sleep, I am actually just referring to low power states. Windows will try to save power and put devices into low power states some time after the system goes idle. You can tell windows to run in high performance to avoid issues if you suspect low power problems. better to just use device manager, right click on any suspected device and find properties tab for power management and tell windows not to turn it off to save power.
most current device drivers should not require this. New windows version added more power states that messed up some Bluetooth drivers. (unrelated to your issue)

does make cpu voltage changes and I expect will provide CPU microcode updates. if you are not using it you want to run windows update so that you will get the Microsoft amd microcode update dll installed.

be sure you check to see if there is firmware update to your drive that has the pagefile.sys on it.
These drives will generate bad blocks as they are used. Windows will try and move the data from a bad block during system idle time. The drive will also start to do its cleanup 5 minutes after the system goes idle. deleting the pagefile.sys on system reboot will let the drive firmware cleanup the pagefile.sys and the new one will be allocated to a different area on the drive.

if your system does have sleep, make sure your drive has longer than 5 mins before it sleeps. (or you can boot into bios and leave the system powered so the drive firmware can do its garbage collection)

Update: forgot I had optional hyper v turned on, as I thought about trying my first virtual machine briefly, then never did

Anyhow Uninstaller that feature, restarted system. Virtual memory dropped from original allocated amount to 49152MB

Versus original amount was around 391520mb or something, id have to look at original screenshot to be 100 percent sure. Updating this topic from phone at moment

I think you have some system stability issues unrelated to you trying to set a static pagefile.

Try some specific tests to stress individual components to see what happens. First load up HWiNFO64 (sensors only, logging on) and start up Furmark for GPU and Linpack Xtreme for CPU, for starters. (don't run these at the same time)
If you get BSODs, reboots, freezes, or app crashes you've got some stability issues. The HWiNFO64 log may point you in the direction of the culprit.

Well after i realized i had Hyper V Activated, and decided i wasn't gonna try out using a Virtual Machine these days

Completed 2 Runs of Cinebench R23--Single Core & Multi Core
Battlefield 2042 So far no longer freezes up at all--ran the game for over an hour last night, 3 Rounds--no issues to report

I will still try those other benchmarks with Furmark and LinPack Xtreme for CPU, and make sure Hardware Info 64 is set for Logging mode.

Tuesday planning my monthly dust clean out if all goes well with RL, to not have any interference or prevents doing it the day i plan to.

**I did have stabliity issues when i first setup this PC back in July 2024 as i followed a Youtube guide to turn on PBO, and Curve Optimizer in UEFI bios, and set it for the recommended setting, then it was crashing unexpectedly alot, finally turned that off in UEFI bios, and just set a PBO Max Temp 85C, (on Air Cooling)***

((I Never Reset Cmos after trying that though back then))

Then after that updated to latest Stable UEFI bios, Set Load Optimized defaults, configured Expo, PBO Max Temp, and then saved and exited, and left it alone, originally was running UEFI Bios 2.6 something, which was severely outdated---Guess system builder didn't bother to update it before leaving Factory.

Til battlefield 2042 suddenly started freezing while playing it, i never had any other problems to report, but that seems to be gone now from what i can tell--as i played it day before yesterday for 3 rounds, and then 3 rounds last night as well, and it performed fine.
