Ok im just wondering how much virtual memory i should allocate. I have 2 gb of ddr2 1000 ram. I have 2 hard drives 2x 36 gb 10,000 rpm raptors in RAID and 10,000 rpm raptor X 150 gb. Windows is installed onto my RAID. How much should i set please state the initial and maximum. I want the best performance for games.

The general rule is to allocate 2x the ammount of ram so for you 4096 megs of page file.

The main advantage to a manual page file is that it will not fragment...so put the page file to another drive reboot(some apps dont like no page file....), make your new custom one(on your fastest drive).....reboot and your good to go....it also never hurts to defrag the drive you plan to move the page file to first(the drive you will be keeping it on...not the temp one...)

ok i set my initial and maximum size to 4096. I restarted and then it only shows up as 2046, when i click settings again it still shows 4096. Am i supposed to put something else in initial and 4096 only in maximum?

If your goal is to maximize your Windows and gaming experience, add more RAM and reduce your virtual memory.

XP or Vista 32bits -> 3GB.
XP or Vista 64bits -> 4GB or more.

Since I have 4GB and Vista64, I reduced my Virtual Memory to 512MB (we don't see that unit very often now! :)) I can play games and when I quit, no swapping and Windows

alright well when i set my virtual memory to 1024 ( 1024 initial and maximum) and it shows up as 2046 virtual memory on the screen where it just shows how much virtual memory not the one where u can change it. When i set my virtual memory to 4096 it shows up as 5112 or something.

interesting....

could you be paging on more then one drive?

see its 4080(rounding maybe but not 5000 +)

This is why i keep at least some page file
