My Win7 64 bit pro laptop has lost the ability to resolve urls.
Literal IP addresses still work in a browser address bar
You can use DNSlookup etc successfully from a command prompt
You can ping from a command prompt
MS Virtual machine is installed and from within XP mode the browsers work fine
Other machines on my p2p LAN use the same ISP and router and still work fine
Networking works fine
Even Skype works fine
The problems occur wherever you try to DNS a server name or url, e.g. browsing or pop3 email server names.

I’ve also;
+ Flushed the DNS cache
+ Tried both IE and Chrome
+ Cleared all history from both browsers
+ re-set winsock using: netsh winsock reset catalog
+ re-set TCPIP stack using: netsh int ip reset reset.log hit
+ Done a full virus scan with Trend micro
+ Did a Windows system restore to before it happened

It seems to be a Win7 problem.
But what and how to fix it?

Thanks a bunch for any ideas?

I’ve tried “obtain automatically” and setting it to google (8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4)
It makes no difference to the behaviour
The same settings are returned but ipconfig in both Win7 and the XP VM
