I have an Windows XP Mode Virtual drive that I had somehow managed to migrate to a newer laptop. I had it working fine, as long as I had the USB drive connected to the laptop prior to opening the Virtual Machines folder. The drive also had a name different from "Windows XP Mode".

I further created a new "Windows XP Mode" drive on the C drive.

On one occasion, I wanted to use the newer generic C drive version without having the USB drive connected.

Now when I want to use the external drive again, it no longer shows up in the Virtual Machine folder. I am assuming that it has something to do with the vmcx or vhd files, but I am not sure what I need to do to get it back again.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! This is also my first post here.

Well after a little bit of trial and error, I finally got it to work. The trick seemed to be to go through the motions of creating a new virtual disk, up until the point where I could link to the existing drive. Once I got that problem resolved, dealing with the password was the next challenge. For me, the resolution was to continue to use XPMUser in conjunction with my Win 7 password. All is well with the world again.
