Virus on my extrernal HDD

I think I have a virus on my external hard drive. I recently loaded my hard drive with a whole bunch of music files from a friend and ever since then I've had problems. When I connect my hard drive and my mp3 into the computer to transfer files to the mp3, the folders within my hard drive won't open, and if they do manage to open and I try to transfer to the mp3 device, the transfer starts and then freezes and then I can not close the transfer window. Help!

Here is what I would to to remove any spyware/viruses:

There are a few better things to do. (This does not come with a warranty, you are responsible for any software issues caused by running any of these scans.) That being said, I work at an MSP and use these tools daily.

1) Download and run rkill: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill//dl/10/
2) Download and run MalwareBytes (note, do not install pro): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-a...
3) Download and run combofix (note, you will lose internet connection): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/
4) Download and run rootkit remover: http://downloadcenter.mcafee.com/products/mcafee-avert/...
5) Download and run Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool: http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/a...
6): Install your preferred AV software: I use AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials for personal computers and Kaspersky for work PC's. Also, remember “There is only one Lord of the Ring, only one who can bend it to his will. And he does not share power. –Gandalf.” He was also talking about anti-virus software too. DO NOT INSTALL MULTIPLE COPIES OF ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE!!!

After that, use something like Teracopy as opposed to Windows explorer to move files around.

I know this is going to sound nuts, but it also helps to not pirate media that your friend probably got off torrents.

OK! Is this drive locked or encrypted?
You'd better unlock or unencrypted it before you try to access anything on it.

If it is really virus infected, you'd better try a good antivirus tool to clean it well:

If the inner data really cannot be accessed, your drive may get some problems.

From now on, no matter what happens, you should never save your needed data only on one drive.
