Virus Protection Problem on Windows Pro XP

I am having a problem with my computer and am wondering if someone can help.
I am kind of a novice as far as working with computers so please keep that in
mind. My Windows Security Center on my computer says it can not locate my
virus protection, which is Norton's Anitvirus. In my task bar Norton's icon
shows that it is working and is there. However, my computer says it can not
locate it and I should look to load a new virus protection to keep my
computer clean.

I checked the Norton's and it seems to work ok as far as I can tell. Here
are the questions:

1. How do I know that even though my computer shows that Norton's is
working, it actually is?

2. How do I get my computer to recognize the Norton's program? I do not
have the disc to reload Norton's as I did this as a download from Symantec
when I purchased the anitvirus.

3. What causes this happen and why?

I appreciate any and all answers and thank you in advance. I look forward
to your answers, thank you.

It would have been more helpful if you had posted the exact wording of the
message you are seeing. This may address your question:

"What to do when the "Your computer might be at risk. Your virus protection
is unknown" appears when using Norton 2002/2003/2004/2005 products"

All it says in the Windows Security Center is that my virus protection is not
found even though I know it is loaded. I will check the info you gave me and
post back. Thank you.

I see this quite alot with Xp and Norton, aslo long as you are happy that
your antivirus software is up to date switch off the alert.

Either click on the icon in the system tray or Go to Settings, Control
Panel, double click on Security centre, click on recommendations and select
"I have an antivirus program I will monitor myself"

You're probably still believing you're protected with a TRIAL version of
Norton that came with your computer. You'll have to buy a box copy that's
partially up-to-date-, but likely they've had more up-dates since the
version you'll be buying, so you'll have to allow updates. (I use McAfee VS
& Firewall) When you buy your copy, go into CONTROL PANEL> ADD or REMOVE
PROGRAMS, and remove anything related to Symantic, Norton, then reboot, then
install your new virus protection program, be it a newer NORTON or McAfee
..... IF by chance you know you have a NEW NORTON, just remove and re-install
again, provided you have the disk.
