Virus won't even allow me to run avg in safe mode

My desktop PC is running Windows 10 and it has a virus which precvents certain programs such as AVG from opening. I have tried disconnecting the internet and once I do that and try to scan the HD, the system shuts down. It won't even let me open AVG in safe mode. Is there anyway to rid the HD of the virus without wiping the HD? I had thought about buying a case for an external HD, placing the infected HD in it and scanning it through my laptop...

Scanning the drive offline (by placing it in an external enclosure and scanning it in another system as you mentioned) is actually the best way to go if you can't (or won't) wipe the drive. Once the drive is scanned and any infected files have been removed, plug the drive back into it's original machine and run another scan to be sure it actually got everything.

Hi, if you have access to another PC, you could create one of these boot discs with scanners on them. This loads after the BIOS but before Windows and *might* be able to catch and remove the virus.

You will obviously have to create the boot disc / USB stick on another PC.
