Hello, ive been reading up online and apparantly the Octo core from amd, is only a 4 core cpu, with 4 hyperthread like virtual cores, please tell me this isn't the case, and its an 8 core with 8 logical cpu's

It consists of 4 modules which have two integer cores each, but which share the floating point unit. Each integer core has two ALU (arithmetic logic units), for a total of 16 ALUs and four FP units.

Compare to an i7 with four real cores which have three ALUs each.

This has a point of dispute since the launch.

I would argue 4 cores two integer cores per CPU core. Outside of the integer cores, everything else about is resembles a quad.

Even AMD, in their original patent submission for bulldozer, called the "modules" cores. IBM power series server chips, which also uses multiple integer cores, calls it a core.

All that said, the extra integer cores add a lot of muscle that hyperthreading just doesn't have.

And yes, the 8320 is a very good chip. Arguably, the best value on the market right now.

@FALC0N i think i understand, so how does it fair against the core i5's, and will it be better future proofed, as it boasts 8 cores, will those interger cores, come in handy in future gaming, and does it have an advantage over the i5 as they don't have the extra cores?

Sorry for sounding like a nub, i just want to get all my information before buying the CPU, my socket is am3+ so is this the best i can get, the budget for the cpu is £115 and CCl are selling them for 115 at the moment

Also is the XFX radeon 7850 2gb DD edition a good combo with this cpu + 4gb ram (upgrading to 8 when i have the money)

If you already have an AM3+ board then getting the 8320 is a no brainer. Its a great chip at a great price.

Conventional wisdom had been that the I5 is a stronger gaming chip. There are those who disagree. In any case, that direction would involve a whole lot more money.

Futureproofing? Who knows for sure what the future holds? I can say more cores has been a good thing for longevity in recent years.
