The Visioneer OneTouch 5800 USB works fine in Windows 7, they just dropped support for it.

First, install the 5800 driver/software for XP (OneTouch version 3.0). The driver won't be recognized, but you'll need the software later.

Now, download and install the Vista/Windows 7 driver for the Visioneer 9650; it is close enough that it will work. Choose the unknown device in Device Manager, update the driver, tell it you will pick from list, choose Imaging Devices, scroll down to Visioneer, pick the 9650 driver.

Use the _old_ software "Scan Manager" (from OneTouch version 3.0, not 4.0) to scan from the scanner. You'll be able to pick that option in whatever software you use to scan.

Edit: By the way, I'd like to mention to VISIONEER -- if they ever stumble across this post -- that because of things like this, I will avoid their products in the future. It took me all of 30 minutes to get this scanner working on Windows 7 64 bit. It would take an intern engineer all of an afternoon to put together a working driver/software package for their legacy products that a normal user could install. Just put a disclaimer that legacy drivers are for the convenience of customers and are not officially supported. It goes to show how little they care about their customers.

Thanks for your post, you saved me a few bucks! I was all set to throw my Visioneer OneTouch 7600 away until I read your post. As a last ditch effort to save my scanner from the salvage yard I installed the 9650 driver and after some trial and error I was finally able to get my 7600 to work in Windows 7 Enterprise. Thank you so much for your insight.

Like you, I am quite disappointed with Visioneer and their lack of support for these old devices. How much time and effort would it be to build a driver for the latest OS's? I would never buy another product from them again. I have a neighbor that owns a company that was looking to buy a bunch of scanners from Visioneer but I am glad that I was able to talk him out of it. He is now looking to HP or Epson for his scanner purchase.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the post. I have a Visioneer 7100, and this process worked nicely for "unbricking" my scanner. It worked OK until I rebuilt my computer and installed Windows 7 64 bit. Now I've got it back.

I also have a Visioneer 7100 scanner and followed Venner's instructions (installing 5800 driver, then installing 9650 driver, and updating device in device manager) but have not been able to get my 7100 to work yet. It did update and recognize my scanner in device manager (it's saying it's a 9650), but what software are you using to scan? I have my old 7100 CD and installed Paperport but it always says another program is scanning when I try to scan or problem connecting to the TWAIN device. How did you get your 7100 working again? Thanks

You'll probably need to use the TWAIN driver option in whatever program you're using to scan (and use a program that lists that option!); the TWAIN driver was installed along with the 5800 software, iirc. TWAIN is the most 'generic' scanner interface provided on windows, and thus the most likely to be supported by a mismatched scanner driver. Oddly enough, I don't know if Paperport supports it (I never used the software that came with the scanner.)

I don't have the Visioneer scanner handy, but I believe the TWAIN option appeared as "TWAIN32 Visioneer Scanner" or something similar when I ran the scanner from Photoshop (File->Import) or Adobe Acrobat (File->Create Document from Scanner-> Custom Scan). Obviously, it depends on what programs you have on your system, but you could also try "Windows Fax and Scan" which -- if you don't have a shortcut in your start menu -- is located at c:\windows\system32\wfs.exe
