Vista Business not recognizing dual CPU?? Maybe?

Hello everyone, I know that is an ominous headline.
I'll start here.
I have a Dell T7400
Dual X5472.
26gb ram.

I installed a 2nd X5472 and sink, total investment 25 bucks.

After hours of reading everywhere I finally got the system to boot with both CPUs installed.
Here is what I did, updated the bios to A11, and msconfig->boot->Advanced->2 processors.
I did this with only one CPU and then shut down and restarted with both installed and it ran fine. I then read that clicked DETECT HAL should be checked for one bootup with both CPUs. So I did that as well.

Ok. So now here is where I stand.

Right click My computer-.Properties only shows one CPU.
However under device manager, open Processors it shows 8 distinct processors. ie cores.

I'm not entirely convinced everything is setup correctly. I'm reading a lot about updating the HAL file, but I have 4 of them, I have no idea which one and certainly don't want to mess anything up and brick this machine!

2 are version 6.0.6002.18005. However they are in different locations. Both installed same date and time. April 2009
One is System32(c:\windows)
one is hal.inf_6e4a7ef2(C:win\sys32\driverstore\filerepository

One is version is 6.0.6001.18000 installed Jan 2008
hal.inf_bafb150f(C:win\sys32\driverstore\filerepository

last one is
6.0.6000.16386 installed Nov 2006
hal.inf_8bcee68b(C:win\sys32\driverstore\filerepository


I'm sure some of you are saying, "MAN! I don't need all this info!" But it's easier to get all this out now, then to have someone ask and wait.

I went to run a test with Cinebech and it only shows 2 core 2 threads @3.00ghz. If that matters at all.

It may be that you don't have the right HAL to detect?

You may have to look for .inf files for your processor or motherboard. I tried a quick check on Intel's site and failed. Unfortunately I've run out of time.

You can also run someting like CPU-Z and see if that detects your multi-processor. I do suspect something is wrong if the benchmark doesn't show all the threads/cores - might be in the benchmark setup.

Depending on what os your running.

When windows loads click on the start bar.

Click on the search box.
Type: Msconfig.

Select the search result, click on ms config.
Click on the boot tab in the new window box that shows.

Click on the advanced options tab.
Tick the box that says Number of processors.

Select the amount of processors for windows to use and utilize.
Click on apply, then ok.
Restart the system, and reload windows in normal mode.

Use windows resource manager where it should display all of the cpu cores windows is utilizing, shown on the right side of the window, Checking to see if any are parked. If so a software patch may have to be applied, that can be found on the MS support website for the os you are using.

sadly, I think this MIGHT be an issue. They are identical but the steps are different. I've certainly read both ways though. Some say it's fine, some no.

I did that. That is how I got the computer to boot with both of them in.
The resource manager only shows ONE core. "Checking to see if any are parked. If so a software patch may have to be applied, that can be found on the MS support website for the os you are using."
This is interesting..... I don't see anything like this.


TO ALL-
Concerning the stepping issue.
I would think that the computer wouldn't show all the cores in the device manager if it didn't recognize the 2nd CPU.

Can the stepping be end user upgraded? or modified?


CPU-Z is only showing one processor. Meaning, I can't select a 2nd. But it's also only showing 2 core/2 thread. This is a quad core chip.....
ahhhh what?!?!
CPU-Z is also showing the chip Name is E5472....
HOWEVER the Spec line shows X5472

They are for sure X5472.

what IN THE HELL?

UPDATE.
Took out the original CPU and swapped the new one. Just to see if MAYBE the old one was hurt.
Same situation.
Only showing 2 cores on a 4 core chip.
CPUz shows E on "Name" line and X on spec line.

Gotta be a software issue some where. Right?

well did you try your ''new'' 2ed chip by its self ?? maybe its just bad / defective. I assume it came from like e-bay a used pull out ??

like I was saying could of been a typical e-bay deal and the guy never tested the chip or knew all along and misrepresented thing just to sell ??

its not like dell give any conclusive support on anything like maybe a certain bios has to be used or much of anything for that matter .

now here there were 2 of these chips see your first chip may of been this and ment to be used in prebuilts like dell from intel or a first release that dell bought and were using at the time when your computer was built ??

Junkey, NO! If figured we posted around the same time. I just wanted you to refer up, that's all.

It was an ebay sale, it was listed as tested.
And as I'm trying to say, the machine is now running with the new chip and new chip only. I took out the original chip.
Put the NEW chip where the OLD chip was, same socket, and booted the machine on the NEW chip ONLY. One chip.
BOTH chips report in the bios as the same info. Except the Stepping. Which I know as you've pointed out could be an issue.

But what I'm trying to convey is the system is only recognizing 2 cores on a 4 core chip. EITHER chip by itself is only showing 2 cores. So it's not even recognizing all 4 cores. So there IS an issue somewhere.

As far as the report of good/bad/wrong info. It depends where you look. On the CPUz it has contradictory information for BOTH chips separately. Meaning, I checked both chips by themselves and it shows contradictory.

something else I find funny is when you look things up you see ''dell'' chips - ''HP'' chips now is it they were factory speced from intel to use ??

may try a older cpu-z around the time frame of your system [ new cpu-z may of dropped some supporting features needed ?? ]

Ok update.
with the new CPU installed and ONLY that one. I got the machine to recognize 4 core by unchecking the "number of processors" and rebooting. No idea why it decided to work this time.

So I then tried installing both Chips only to have it repost/reboot.

So then I decided to try the OLD processor by itself. And it booted fine, with 4 cores. Which it never did.

So I've got the machine to recognize 4 cores on both chips separately. So both chips are good and functional.

Nowwwwww to get it to run 8 cores....
So that's where I am.
So maybe this is the Stepping issue...

EasyBCD seems to be a recommended software... But I don't know if it will work for me.

If the processors are NOT the same stepping, it is my understanding it will NOT work.

Also, Intel has a processor identification utility on their site. It may tell you something about both processors and, perhaps, the combination of processors.

maybe ?? then sure seems to be a lot on making sure there matched ? [maybe just as far as say a x5472 and another x5472 ?? ]

one thing you could try and see if it is a os limitation is burn a live bootable dvd of Linux and boot to it and see how it shows up / works out under it ?? cant hurt to see real quick and easy + free to do

maybe under Linux you can catch something or verify ? thing is you see there the dell chips offered and then hp chips offered as well as I guess run of the mill chips offered ..

I wonder if like dell and hp bought special lots /runs of these chips and why there listed that way [there tray chips so a heatsink has nothing to do with all that ]

then maybe something in the dell's bios it has to fall under a certain microcode between the bios and the chips ?? thing is like you looking things up nothings is conclusive or puts a finger on anything ..

It's not an OS-type thing. Try it by all means, but it won't work. Stepping control the inter-processor communications. If they aren't completely synced, they can't communicate and boot up. You will have to get two matched processors.

It's kind of a negative for making older dual-processor systems work if you plan to buy a 2nd processor later.

on more thing I have to now ask thinking on it

why did you not have 2 chips in it factory from dell ?? seems odd they sell a 2 chip board with only one chip in it ?? is there a reason you only had one cpu until now ??

also I found you post at dell and your dell buddy there said along the lines of matched chips as well ??? and that was my thinking all along as well and the ''thing to do '' like sli you get matched cards or things may suffer ...

I cannot answer that. I am not the original owner of the system. In 09 I'm sure it was a pretty stout machine cost a good amount of money and they probably didn't want to spend the cash.
