When I was installing Vista, it went fine until it reached the phase after the reboot where it said "Completing Installation" and vista install freezes " the stage described in this image"

http://www.9q9q.org/index.php?image=ScidEcfEcvutZz

My pc configuration:

1.M.B : Msi 975x platinum powerup edition
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=746
2.BIOS version: 7.4 "newst version"
3.External VGA Type: xfx geforce 7300le "PV-T72P-RAN7" 128MB Suporting 512MB
http://www.xfxforce.com/web/product/listConfigurationDetails.jspa?series=GeForce%26trade%3B+7300&productConfigurationId=665212
4.CPU Type: Intel Pentium D processor 945+ 3.4GHz 800 MHZ FSB 2X2 MB L2 Cache ... spec : SL9QB
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?procfam=0&sspec=sl9qb&ordcode=
5.Memory Type: Kingston 512MB*2 667 pass dual channel enabled
6.Hard disk: Western Digital 250GB Sata2 , the primary partition is 35GB
7.Power Supply Type: Jumbo 500 watt
8.Operating System: windows xp "till now!"

Notes :

I changed the bios version so many times , and used old and new ones and the problem persists.

I tried to dual boot, upgrade , and make clean install of vista and the same problem happend.

I tried every possible version of vista

I changed almost every piece of pc except M.B and CPU and no difference

I'm using xp now and the pc working perfectly

please Help

Well the image is of no help as it's coming up as plain text. Ah ! I have it now ! Some nasty coding in that page. Wouldn't cut it in Firefox so I opened it in IE6.

I'd recommend disabling any onboard devices not essential to the installation. Serial ports, parallel ports, sound card, NIC, and anything else. Make sure that there are no peripherals connected to the system other than mouse, keyboard and monitor. Hopefully those items are somewhat generic. If the problem continues then I might suspect a video driver issue.

Thank you for your answer.

I disabled all onboard devices and I already don't have any peripherals connected to the system ,Also I changed the video card and no thing changed.

Here we go,

So this solution is good for those who have mobo: MSI 975X -Platinum Edition (V2), could work also for other MSI mobo (e.g MSI 975X-Platinum) and try to install vista on a IDE HDD.

1.Bios settings

Integrated Peripherals - Onboard JMB361 Mode - Disabled
Integrated Peripherals - IDE Devices Configuration - PCI IDE BusMaster - Enabled
Integrated Peripherals - SATA Devices Configuration - Sata Mode - RAID

2. HDD and DVD connection

As long you've disabled the Jmicron you should connect these 2 above on that blue IDE connector from mobo, the yellow one is controlled by Jmicron. The order is not important(master, slave) and as long anytime all HDD are bellow DVD in the case, it is natural to put DVD-Master and the HDD-Slave (but here is your option)

3. HDD with partitions and XP already installed (my case)

After you put (change) those settings in Bios as 1.), boot XP, it's gonna ask you about new hardware (RAID)..install drivers from mobo CD or Jmicron...restart (with vista inside your DVD)..start instalation (30min with Pentium D 945)..enjoy..should be no more headaches.

4. New HDD

After you put (change) those settings in Bios as 1.), boot from vista dvd..installing.
If you still have that "frozen" problem..start again the instalation and in that moment when you'll have a screen with your partition(s) you'll find in that window "load external drivers". Be prepared wit a CD with Jmicron drivers and install them.
After this should be OK.
If not, we're gonna think and we'll find the solution

Good Luck!
======

Edit ;>)

As an afterthought, are you using the J-Micron controller and if so, the latest J-Micron drivers ? I won't use a board with J-Micron anything on it. Too many issues.

No I don't use jmicron at all, And tried before to disable it and no thing changed.

I'm now trying to set my sata hdd as raid, Altough I don't think it will solve the problem

OK, I'm gonna give this another whirl now that I've read some of the manual. This is what I'd do :

1) Run a non-DOS DEBUG over the hard drives boot sector.

2) Perform a low-level format of the hard drive.

3) Boot to BIOS and load the Fail-Safe defaults.

4) Reboot the system to BIOS and disable the following on-board items :

A) Onboard BCM GB LAN
B) Onboard VIA6306 (IEEE1394)
C) Onboard JMB361 Mode (Optional)
D) Azalia / AC97 Audio Selection
E) Parallel port
F) Serial port
G) Intel SpeedStep tech
H) Execute Disable Bit
I) Virtualization Technology
J) Boot from Other Device
K) Boot Sector Protection ( <-- WTF ?? This could be a REAL issue !)
L) QuickBoot
M) Full Screen Logo
N) Suspend Time Out (Minute)
O) Resume by PCI-E Device
P) Resume by PCI Device (PME#)
Q) Resume From S3 by USB
R) Resume by RTC Alarm
S) Dynamic OverClocking

5) Set SATA Mode, On-Chip Serial ATA to IDE.

Unfortunately Vista digs pretty deep into areas that should be left to the BIOS. Part of Microsofts grand plans for the PC. I'm not sure how it would deal with changing/disabling of the ACPI but I'd seriously consider this an option as well.

If all of that doesn't resolve the issue then I'd have to say you have one of the few pieces of hardware that simply isn't compatible with Vista. Yet.

Noticed your primary partition is 35 gigabytes on the hard drive --- Is this partition being use to install vista ---For the ultimate version the recommended is 40 gigs --- it says that the minimum is 20 gigs but you will loose some features -----does anyone know how hard drive space must be free for vista to install ---- if under 40 gigs --- could it cause some features to freeze under the install--- dont know if this is problem - but maybe someone could help to eliminate this as issue????

You probably already did this ----- but did you try running the vista upgrade advisor on this pc under xp just to see if it says if any hardware is not compatible or vista ready?????????? If you did, would be curious as to what it said.....hope all goes well..... good luck

I'm wondering if it doesn't have something to do with the Core Cell widget MSI puts on their motherboards.

Photographer,

you are correct --- its 40GB with 15GB free space ----wondering ---- what happens if your hard drive is under 40 gigs (even with 15 gigs of free space).
Not sure what happens????????

Not sure with core cell ---- guess that msi would publish something if that was issue ---- did you read something on this??? Would vista upgrade advisor catch this????

I haven't heard anything on it but it could be an issue during installation if the temp files are hogging the drive.

Might. Might not. I never give hardware vendors a whole lot of credit in issues like this.

did you read something on this??? Would vista upgrade advisor catch this????

Haven't read anything however it is a motherboard device (at least it is on my MSI nForce3 board) and as such it's possible that Windows would attempt to install a driver/ACPI command set for it. I know there has got to be a way around this lockup but right now I don't have time to do an OSRI to find it.

Still wondering what upgrade advisor said with regard to this pc --- original poster never mentioned using upgrade advisor and indicated he had xp installed??????? Would seem to me this would be place to start????

I agree however I don't think it's going to provide a lot of info if it's the digi-cell thingy. It's something like an extra BIOS chip on the 'board and as I recall it doesn't show up in Windows' Device Manager.

Unfortunaly I did all that , and no difference.

But I'm sure that the M.B is compatible with vista.

I don't know if this issue may come from the Core Cell, But in Msi forum guys installed Vista on My M.B and when I told them about the issue they didn't told any thing about core cell.

Yeah I have this problem also, I got some new hard drives so I decided to REinstall vista but kept freezing at the completing installation screen. I tried four different hard drives with the same results, removed all hardware except video card but the same freezing persists. I now have XP pro installed, Im gonna give it another shot in a couple of days and see what happens.

Hey, I seem to be having somewhat the same problem:

A few minutes after the first reboot the install seems to freeze, the harddisk activity led is on however I cannot hear anything.
Then after a few minutes the systems reboots itself but the hd seems to remain frozen and I have to manually reboot to make it detect the drive again.

My motherboard's a gigabyte 965P-S3 though, but it does also have a jmicron chip for sata2. Unfortunately I can't find an BIOS option to disable it.

I have tried everything that I could think but it keeps freezing.
Any ideas?

Had the the same problem, this worked for me.
Disable Speedstep Technology in your BIOS as well as something called APIC, as well as JMB361 or something.
Before I started installing Vista , I ran some eraser program apparently its more effective than formatting your harddrive. This is where it gets blurry for me, I cant remember if than reinstalled Win xp and upgraded to Vista maybe I just installed vista( might work either way).
After Vista installed I enabled speedstep technology but not APIC and JMB361.Dont use the yellow IDE port on your MBoard it wont work.
Vista runs like a dream apart from one little problem, it takes forever to load windows from a restart, overcome that by put going into sleep mode or hibernate mode rather than shutting down.
If you dont use the eraser software it wont work, at least it did not for me.
Anybody know what APIC in the BIOS is supposed to do?
System is
MSI 975 x Plat V2
Geforce 7600
2 Gb Ram
160Gb Harddrive
Wireless USb Kb and mouse, so rules out USB issues

The following worked for me:

I put the video card memory to 64MB in the BIOS, even though it is bigger. It worked for me. Vista stopped freezing.
