Vista programs won't run on startup

Hello,
After startup I can't get programs (Outlook, IE etc)to run. Taskbar icons won't display their name popup. But if I run MyComputer (explorer) it will start but not close, or explore folders further. Closing using Task Manager works and then! programs regain their functionality and work normally. What's happening and how do you fix it??

I also had this problem but after installing an antivirus programme (genuine) the problem disappeared. so try installing an genuine antivirus or Quickheal Native boot scan .

Well, I've uninstalled Avast Free and installed MSE. That is working fine but the problem is still there. A workaround at the moment is to run Task Manager. As soon as that is on screen all icons work normally. But it is still very annoying. I'd like to know what's happening. BTW putting Task Manager in startup doesn't fix the issue.

Now I've discovered that Ctrl Alt Del is what is making everything work again, even if I cancel the screen immediately and return to my desktop. But why is this the case??

I think I've fixed it - it's got something to do with User Accounts. Anyway I logged on and off as a guest, went back to my own account and since then I've had no problem. A conflict of some kind, no doubt.
